It looks like FL cases are coming down, hospitalizations are near a plateau - and because of the lag deaths are rising. What remains uncertain is how fast hospitalizations will come down after the peak. This is because cases & patients are getting older, & lower vax areas the last to crest.

COVID-19 update: Florida reports steep drop in new cases but largest increase in deaths in two months

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/co...ths/ar-AASUnf3

Florida’s average daily rate for new COVID-19 cases fell to its lowest level of the month but an increase in deaths sent the 7-day average to its highest point since before Thanksgiving, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

The state added 365 deaths to its total count on Tuesday, bringing the 7-day rolling average to 92. The last time the average was over 90 was on Nov. 17, 2021. Over the past week, Florida has reported 642 new COVID-19 deaths, the largest one-week increase since Nov. 12.

Death reports lag behind case reports by several weeks and many experts expected to see death counts rise even after the state rounded the peak in new cases. During last summer’s delta wave, deaths peaked about 14 days after cases.

Florida on Tuesday backfilled case and death data from the holiday weekend, reporting 111,621 new cases over three days. The daily counts are some of the lowest since Christmas, and the 7-day average for new cases dropped to 49,537, the lowest level since New Year’s Eve. The count does not include those who tested positive using at-home test kits.

Today's Update From Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota & Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice
COVID-19 Patient Update
Includes hospitalized patients who are positive for COVID-19 and those cleared of infection but still hospitalized at SMH facilities.

Total COVID inpatients today: 214 (208 yesterday)
COVID patients in ICU: 29 (28 yesterday)
% Unvaccinated Inpatients*: 63% (updated weekly on Wednesdays)

* We categorize patients as “vaccinated” once they have received the required primary dose(s) of a COVID-19 vaccine and 2 weeks have passed since the final dose. At this time, we do not require that patients have booster doses to be categorized as fully vaccinated. An increase in break-through infections is expected as the Omicron variant spreads and immunity wanes among those who are high-risk and those who have not yet gotten a booster dose. COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots are still the most effective method in preventing severe illness and hospitalization.

COVID-19 Test Results
SMH positivity rate: 23.2% (27.6% for week ending Jan. 14, 2022)

Cumulative COVID-19 Cases:
Total number of patients treated since outbreak began.
Patient admissions: 5,551 (5,509 yesterday)
Patient deaths: 557 (no change from yesterday)

This news of a record high positivity rate in Manatee County is kind of surprising to me because it's apparent that Florda as a whole has peaked in cases and test positivity. That being said counties in SE Florida will be the first to peak because they were the first to have their Omicron waves rise and they were hit hard. Tomorrow when FDOH releases their weekly report we'll get a better handle of what's going on in Sarasota & Manatee Counties.

School arts performance postponed by record-high COVID positivity rate in Manatee County, athletics unaffected

https://www.wfla.com/news/local-news...cs-unaffected/

The highly-contagious omicron variant of coronavirus is impacting the school system in Manatee County. The district is implementing additional proactive mitigation measures in an effort to slow the spread.

The positivity rate in Manatee County was over 30% on Tuesday, which is a record high since the start of the pandemic. Before students were dismissed for winter break, the county’s positivity rate was 6.9%, according to the department of health.

"The two days before we went on winter holiday break, we had 10 positive cases in our schools – that was four staff members and six students. The last two days of school we have had here in Manatee County, we have had 63 staff members and 255 students that were positive in our schools,” Director of Communications Michael Barber said. “It is a dramatic increase and we have to take extra steps to handle that increase.”

This article I came across today says the test positivity ratio in Sarasota County is currently 32%. This is also kind of surprising because the test positivity ratio at Sarasota Memorial hospital has been drifting lower recently and today SMH had it at 23.2%.

Florida suspends health official who urged staff to get vaccinated

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/flo...ed-2022-01-19/

A top Florida public health official has been put on administrative leave as officials investigate whether he violated a state ban by emailing employees about their low vaccination rate against COVID-19 and urging them to get shots.

The official placed on leave, Dr. Raul Pino, the Florida Department of Health's director in Orlando, sent his staff an email on Jan. 4 noting their low vaccination rate and urging them to get shots, according to Orlando's WFTV. Pino had an analyst pull vaccination data for his employees, WFTV reported.

The Florida Department of Health said it was conducting an inquiry to determine if any laws were broken.

In the Jan. 4 email, Pino said he had pulled vaccination data for his 568 active employees, and that less than half had two doses while only 14% had their booster, according to WFTV.

Today's Florida Covid Hospitalizations

https://twitter.com/thehowie/status/1484248228216381440

"(LATE) Florida Hospital update:

Census (11,525) DOWN 2% from yesterday & DOWN 0.1% from one week prior.

ICU census (1601) DOWN 1% from yesterday and UP 9% from 1 week prior.

This is peak/plateau. Am expecting a similar drawdown of census to NY, CT, etc (slow but meaningful)."

It's continuing to look like hospitalizations are at a plateau. The test positivity ratio is continuing to drift lower. However there were 5 more Covid deaths since yesterday. Because of the lag deaths will be the last metric to peak.
