my wife and I just canceled our cruise for this week. we want to look at the Sarasota/Bradenton area for future retirement. Is this a bad week to visit because of spring break?

Spring break tends to jack up the prices for everything! But the prices may not be jacked up as much, maybe even discounts, if there are a lot of cancellations. However, you should consider if there are travel bans imposed within the US while you are in Florida, you might be stuck in Florida for weeks or months with no way to get back to your home state by air or land. Another thing to consider is if the economy sinks significantly lower, the people that are currently selling their homes now, and the people that will be selling their homes in the future, might have to reduce their asking prices.

The 2007 - 2008 downturn turned out to be an excellent buying opportunity timeframe in Florida. We missed that buying opportunity. Some properties probably sold for 40% to 50% off their full potential asking price. If you are in a position where you don't need to sell your current home, or you are currently renting, then you could possibly buy your Florida home a discount in the future, perhaps a deep discount, depending on what happens to the economy. There will always be people that are not in a good financial position when the economy takes a downturn, who will be desperate to sell their home. If the economy tanks, people lose their jobs, or if America becomes a Socialist county, the economy could totally collapse, and there will be very high unemployment. The housing prices could crash harder than in 2007 - 2008. That's not a good situation for people living too close to the edge, or unlucky at life, but it could be a better home buying opportunity for you in the future.

Probably not a good time to visit for other more important reasons.

March is the busiest month of the year, traffic-wise. It's not a crazy spring break place, but there are plenty of families vacationing in the area. If you can find a place to stay at a rate you like, I'm sure you'd have a fine time. Just understand there will be increased traffic everywhere you go, there will be no parking available at Siesta Key beach after 9am, restaurants may have wait times, etc. But if you can plan ahead and be patient, you'll be OK.

Excellent advice. This area is not a college crowd Spring Break place. Its too boring for most of them.

We get other types of vacationers, which all mix in with our annual snowbird population.

We try to eat lunch out, and stay home for dinner this time of year. We avoid Siesta Key entirely.

We stay at home, or close to home a lot more until after Easter when things begin to die back down to a normal level.

OP basically said he cancelled a cruise for that exact reason, yet still wants to travel. To each his own.

There is no Spring Break here. It's fairly deserted.
If you want to hole up in a Hotel and drive around to check out RE that could be a thing...take out food is available or get something with a Kitchen (Airbnb, etc.)
