We are hoping to buy in Sarasota County sometime in the next few months or so and I was wondering about smells emanating from water reclamation/treatment plants. Is it common and how bad does it get?

I've never lived near one but when we lived in another state, I'd frequently take my kids to a park near one. Boy, those smells were sometimes enough to make us give up and just leave.

Any idea on how long these odors last or how far they extend? Is living 2-3 miles away enough distance to keep from being impacted?

TIA!

Forget living next to the plants. I avoid being out in the lawn of my own house about 10 - 15 mins after the lawn sprinkle is turned on. It stinks. I don't even dare water my edible plants using that stinky water.

We can drive up I-75 and you know you're near Venice when you can proclaim "it smells like farts!" You smell it even inside a car at highway speed. As graceC mentioned, the sulfur smell definitely lingers.

The county is upgrading the facility on Bee Ridge, but nothing mentioned about how that would impact air quality:

2-3 miles away is plenty far enough away. I lived <1 mile away in a rental in Palmer Ranch, & the only time I could smell t was if I rode my bike, or drove, right past it. It was a smaller plant however, not as large as the one alongside I-75.

If you are > 1 mile away, I doubt you'd ever smell it, unless you passed it at much closer range.
