Hi. I moved here a few months ago, and I really need to find a great stylist who'll listen and do justice to my very thick, wavy (not curly) and medium course hair. It seems I look better with more shoulder-length hair so I don't want someone who just cuts super short or long hair. I went to one person not long after I moved here and have suffered ever since. Instead of knowing how to properly layer my thick hair, she did a razor cut, which should never have been done on hair like mine. It's one of the worse cuts I've ever had and has been so difficult to deal with. I'm living in Venice, at least for now, but I'll gladly travel to a fantastic stylist in Sarasota or wherever nearby. I have some pictures and ideas of what I might want, but I hope to find someone who'll also give me suggestions or be honest and tell me those won't work for my face. I want someone who'll actually take the time to give me a cut that's easy to maintain (versus causing me a daily struggle), and a current style that's flattering on me and will make me look ten years younger, not older! I want to love my new stylist. Unfortunately, I find most charge a fortune but don't know how to cut thick, wavy (not curly) and course hair like mine. I also need someone who does excellent highlights (bleach/foils) because I also want to have that done but not until they make me happy with the cut first. I've been researching different places, but I find it odd that not a lot of stylists around here post their work and some salons don't even have websites. Thanks in advance for any recommendations and advice based on your experiences.

Thank you so much. I'll definitely check her out. It's interesting that she has a 407 area code, which is what I had before I moved here, so I assume she also came from Central FL.

Eden Salon in Venice. Ask for Jana. Amazing job. Great with color, great with curly, wavy, thick hair.

I've seen her do consults, too, so you could meet her and see if it's a good fit.

OMG!!! A razor cut, you poor thing! I have thick, coarse, wavy hair too, but actually a curly mess underneath. It is really tricky dealing with my hair, which is about 2" below chin-length. One time about 10 years ago I thought a shag would look real cute, so whoever did it used a razor. First, it was a sea of ends sticking out all over. Then the long part (the "shag" portion) was thick and not shaggy at all. I don't even know why I thought my hair could pull that off.

I'm still looking for the hairdresser of my dreams -- unfortunately, the one I like the best is my old one back in PA. But I do keep a folder in my iPhone for "hair" pictures (both color and cut) so I can show them what I like and what I don't like. If you find someone great, let us know!

Zee came from Miami - she has a facebook page called "Zee Hair Artist" where you can see examples of her work - I have very long hair and am very, very picky - she is expensive though - but I guess you get what you pay for

Thanks. Exactly! A razor cut on my hair has been, well, very painful, to say the least. If a stylist even mentions those words to me again, I'm going to get up and walk out. I'll be the happiest person ever if I find a great stylist so that I can update this thread with a positive outcome.
