He did not name the river but my Uncle Tave once told me that, when the family lived in Parish, FL around the turn of the 20th century my mother rode horseback across the river into Hillsborough County to go to school. Can anyone hazard a guess as to what river? I see pictures of those rivers and they look wide. Of course, wide does not mean deep but I still ponder it.

Take a look using Google Earth...

It's probably a trib of the Little Manatee or Hillsborough I would think

There are tons of tribs of the Little Manatee River...the tribs sprawl and curve everywhere and is very shallow at many many points

Parts of the Little Manatee river are definitely shallow enough to cross on horse during the dry parts of the year. I have canoed there and in February I had to drag the canoe over low spots where the water was only calf deep.

Thank you, Castlechurch. That is what I wanted to know. Looking at pictures does not answer depth I so wish I had saved Uncle Tave's letters.

How often have we all said that?

It is a big deal to him. So, please be nice. It is hard not to notice how rude and impolite you are. Since you are obviously intelligent and at times insightful a little kindness and people would like you.

Opinions are varied, people not need think the same, it's called "freedom". Silencing innocuous opinion is tyranny....that too is MY expressed opinion in a free society....censoring divergent opinion is a slippery slope it seems to me. Freedom should be paramount...I'm certainly NOT shouting "fire" in a theater. What is this great nation becoming? Silencing speech that you don't agree with is a dangerous action. No one "anoints" overlords to adjudicate fair and free speech, no matter the medium. What's wrong with this nation?

I pray for this great Nation every day....free and fair speech is becoming anathema to our principles. Free speech is not being scolded, and reduced to being "rude".

We're in trouble as a free nation. God help us.

Merry Christmas and God Bless ALL .
