The bill is a major victory for Florida Power & Light, which wrote the initial legislation.

TALLAHASSEE — Florida homeowners will have until Dec. 31, 2028, to install rooftop solar systems before all incentives disappear under a bill the state Senate sent to the governor on Monday after ignoring warnings that it will decimate the state’s growing solar industry.

The bill, HB 741, achieves the top priority of the state’s largest utility, Florida Power & Light, by phasing out current billing credits for homeowners and businesses that sell excess energy from their solar arrays back to the utility companies.

But instead of immediately eliminating the so-called net metering credits, as FPL’s original language sought, legislators worked out a compromise with the solar industry that phases out the credits.

Governor DeSantis vetoed the bill yesterday. I’m surprised and thought it was a done deal, FPL probably thought so too.

I guess they have to cough up more “funding” or maybe he has a friend in the solar business
Seems like he has other friends in other businesses that can make a difference

Of higher concern to me is having a bill pass through the legislature that was written and lobbied with millions of dollars by FPL and voted in favor of by both parties.

I don’t know what your awareness level is about how legislation is written but the GOP has the habit of letting outside actors write their bills in many states that outline what the lobby for that sector wants and then they find legislators to “sponsor” it like THEY wrote the bill—
FPL has probably been behind other bills regarding public utilities, taxation, climate change if it served their corporate needs
Just like the insurance industry, media outlets, land developers have done for decades

Nothing new
Something to worry about sure—
But the only way to do it differently is to elect officials with other values

Putting monetary limits on corporate lobbying is the path to stopping the influence and control of large corporations with deep pockets. Neither party seems able to do this so far.

I’m still glad this bill that influenced cross-over partisan votes in the legislature was vetoed.
