I have not seen mentioned anywhere in the news....odd.

I'm in Venice and just signed a contract with a local roofer to get a new roof. I had to sign and get notarized the Notice of Commencement that will go towards getting the permit. Sarasota county requires that. I can't imagine Sarasota county would waive that requirement for out of state roofing companies.

I got back from Asheville NC a week ago from yesterday and I had no sooner got here when a guy pulls up in front of my house wanting to replace my roof. He said the insurance would pay for a new roof. What he was doing was illegal and I know from talking to my insurance agent that there is no way I'm getting a new roof for free. I should have turned that guy in but I was more interested in getting up on my roof to fix it.

Another guy approached my neighbor and he offered to glue on the 5 tiles he had missing. He wanted $8,000 for a few hours work. My neighbor told him to take a hike.

LMAO. 5 tiles. Should be more like $500 if done but an actual roofer.

good! I wonder how easy & fast it is for an out of town roofer to get Florida license to do Ian work?

There can't be enough local Florida roofing companies to do all the work we have at this time, so the state must do something to bolster capacity.

Even when there isn't a hurricane you still see them.

Back in December after that wind storm we had I saw a lot of out of state roofers here in Punta Gorda. You remember that right? In Venice I think had wind gusts over 70 too.

A few mets even think that storm back in Dec was sub tropical and should of been named. The Gulf was above normal upper 70s and it had some tropical characteristics. Winds gusted over 80 here in Punta Gorder. IMO it was sub tropical and should have been named.

It's a tough situation for the state regulators, & insurance companies to navigate through for sure.

Not all out of state roofers are crooks, but of course many are. How to know is nearly impossible.

I know this, I would not sign any legal document/contract to engage any of them, nor would I give any of them 1 penny in advance of commencement of work.

Anyways, back to the topic of traffic. Its still staying busy, so I'm guessing its mostly Ian related.

Too bad, it seems like each year something spoils my favorite times of year. here...April-May & October-November.

The drivers seem mostly civil, so I'm glad for that. I try to tell myself these extra cars are filled w/ people trying to help people.

Around here these out of town people drive SLOW and don't know where they're going! Very slow!!

Seeing a lot of contractors from places like Texas, GA, and MS. Lots in addition to large trucks too.

They either do 20 mph or 100. Not many normal drivers. The slow people also stop abruptly.

I-75 is a parking lot heading north.

Just north. Not south.

If anyone can explain that, I'd love to hear it.

As I understand it Florida licensed roofing companies/building companies can do the repair or building work in the counties where the damages were incurred. They don't need local business licenses to do this, if they are appropriately licensed by the state for the work they do. They do have to file for permits, though, and other required paperwork, and the work has to go through the county inspection process.

We're starting to get cold calls from people representing roofing companies to come out and give us estimates for new roofs. You better believe they will be vetted before they step foot on the property.

Be careful out there, fraud abounds.
