The long-awaited dining addition has city officials fuming after the company failed to install the traffic improvements it promised along 43rd Street West.

On Wednesday, Bradenton City Council briefly considered stepping in to block the restaurant from opening, citing traffic concerns.

When the city approved the Chick-Fil-A in October 2021, officials said they would require the company to complete certain off-site improvements. One of those improvements is a new “traffic deceleration” lane that would allow for a southbound dedicated right turn onto the property at 4311 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.

In a statement provided to the Bradenton Herald Thursday afternoon, Chick-Fil-A said the lane could not be installed while they awaited permits from the county and state.

“We are eager to start the project but are still waiting to receive all necessary permits. We deeply value our relationship with local city officials and are sorry for any misunderstanding,” Chick-Fil-A said. “We are currently working with contractors to start work on the phases of the project that have been permitted.”

Mayor Gene Brown, who owns and operates a funeral home just south of the new Chick-Fil-A, said he has been asking about the required traffic improvements “for months.”

Brown proposed two options — blocking the restaurant from opening until Chick-Fil-A agrees to install the traffic improvements or allowing Thursday’s opening to go on as planned.

Chick-Fil-A’s drive-thru lanes have been designed to hold up to 52 cars, but vehicles will almost certainly back up onto the street for the popular restaurant’s debut.

Other council members said they were “very disappointed” in Chick-Fil-A for casting the city’s transportation safety needs aside. Even before city officials approved it, they expressed serious concern about how the restaurant would affect traffic on Manatee Avenue and 43rd Street West.

52 cars?? I mean, what's sadder is for fast food someone would wait in a line with dozens of cars just to eat junk food.

Chic Filas are a blight to the neighborhoods surrounding them.

Disgusting business practices.

This is a gov't coverup. Some government agency failed to get the permits approved so the work could begin in timely fashion, so now they are blaming the company who filed for the permits.

Our local store (in Georgia) is an attractive building located in an area where its traffic is well managed.

To what "business practices" ae you referring?

I've attempted to dine at two locations (Long Island New York and Charlottesville Virginia) and left the traffic line both times after waiting nearly 20 minutes with hardly any forward momentum. So I am actually yet to experience the cuisine.

Why is this food so popular? Is there some sort of "secret ingredient"....

I remember in the TV series "Breaking Bad" the fictional fast food chain "Los Pollos Hermanos" seemed to have an interesting supply chain of fry batter for the chicken.

The store here has two lanes. Orders are taken outside by employees with tablets who also take your payment. During busy times there are four people doing that. The two lanes merge and orders are delivered to your vehicle from a door, not a window. If your food is ready before people ahead of you in line, you get it and pull around those still waiting.

The signature sandwich is a breaded and fried chicken breast, but you can get it grilled if you prefer. Chicken fingers and nuggets can be fried or grilled, and the nuggets are pieces of chicken, not pressed chicken parts. Their salads are good and they have fruit and yogurt options. Their chicken soup is very good.

I do not eat breakfast there so I am not as familiar with those options.

The staff are friendly and efficient.

Our restaurant has a dining room with table service.

They could not build the lane until the gov't granted the permit to build the lane, & somehow now its Chik-Fil-A's fault for the gov'ts failure to grant the permit?

Whoever wrote that article, clearly has an agenda.

If anyone in gov't is fuming, they should be fuming at whomever sat on the permit request...within the gov't.

Our Son worked at a Chik-Fil-A in the Northern Suburbs of Atlanta for a few months, & it remains his favorite fast food restaurant. He said they always got 100's on their County inspections.

Many times, the owners of the restaurant are locals who live nearby, and work in their own restaurants. They have a stringent qualification process to become an owner...it takes years.

Here's how our then 17 year old Son got hired at Chik-Fil-A...

He was standing in line inside at the counter waiting for his food, and the completed order in front of him was on a tray waiting for an elderly couple to take it to their table. The elderly man had a walker, & the woman had a large purse. Our Son offered to take their tray to their table, which they accepted.

When our Son returned to the counter to get his own completed order, one of the owners handed him an application, and said if he ever wanted to work there, they'd love to have him. He started a few days later, but first had to complete a thorough 2-week training process.

Your son sounds like he was brought up right and is going to be a good man.
