Popular national sports bar restaurant announces opening date for first Sarasota location

A popular national restaurant chain, billed as the "ultimate sports lodge," has announced the opening date for its first Sarasota location.

Twin Peaks is in the new Fruitville Commons development by Interstate 75 and Fruitville Road, about seven miles directly east of downtown Sarasota. The Texas-based chain informed the Herald-Tribune that they plan to start welcoming guests to their Fruitville Commons lodge next month following a store opening in Jacksonville.

Currently operating Twin Peaks in Florida include a recently opened lodge in Cape Coral, located about 80 miles south of Sarasota. Twin Peaks was founded in 2005 in the Dallas suburb of Lewisville.

Twin Peaks expects the Sarasota lodge to open Sept. 25.

“We are excited to expand our footprint and reach more of our growing fanbase in Florida with this newest location in Sarasota,” said Twin Peaks CEO Joe Hummel in a statement. “The Fruitville Commons location will be our 12th in the state and will play a huge role for us moving forward as the Tampa Bay area is a large focus for us in the future.”

Twin Peaks is known for ice-cold draft beers and made-from-scratch menu items, ranging from smashed and cooked-to-order burgers to in-house smoked brisket and wings, all served by its Twin Peaks Girls in a comfy, mountain cabin setting.

"The second you step inside, you’re surrounded by a lodge full of friendly and attentive Twin Peaks Girls serving up scratch food and our signature 29° beers," reads the Twin Peaks website:

3 exciting new restaurant and bar openings in downtown Sarasota

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/tri...d9f560b7&ei=26

"Downtown Sarasota is home to many of the best restaurants in the region, and the list continues to grow. Palm Avenue Deli recently started serving lunch, in addition to breakfast, and during a recent walk through downtown, I noticed three more exciting restaurant and bar openings.

The first specializes in gourmet toast, while the second serves authentic Japanese food. Finally, for those of you who enjoy a fine cigar paired with a first-class whisky or perhaps a premium beer, I've found the perfect place for decompressing after a stressful day at the office — or just when you wish to enjoy a nice smoke in an upscale setting."

New restaurant opening in Bradenton with Chinese hot pot, Korean barbecue and more

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/foodanddri...d9f560b7&ei=38

Hong BBQ & Hot Pot opens Tuesday, Aug. 8, at 445 Cortez Road W., in the Orange Blossom Plaza.

The new restaurant features all-you-can eat Chinese hot pot or Korean-style barbecue for $30.99. For $5 more, guests can have both.

All cooking, except the broth for hot pot, like fondue, is done by guests at their table.

"It's an entertaining activity, especially with friends and family members. The broth inside the pot boils over our specially designed heaters, and you have a variety of protein options (meatballs and thinly sliced beef are popular) to add to your pot. In addition to the protein choices, you can add noodles, vegetables, tofu, and more into your soup. The broth comes in many different styles," the restaurant says on its website.

As for the Korean barbecue, the restaurant says:

"Choose from our vast selection of beef, pork, chicken, seafood, and various vegetables; don't forget to invite your grill master! While there are many side dishes to enjoy Korean BBQ with, the meats are definitely the main attraction. Many of the meats are already marinated, carefully crafted by our chefs."

While the food is the main attraction, the setting is unique, colorful and striking. When guests enter, they are greeted by a profusion of lanterns, upside-down umbrellas and a massive dragon's head.

Hours at Hong BBQ & Hot Pot are 1 p.m. to midnight seven days a week.

Sage Restaurant has been honored by Wine Spectator magazine for its wine selection and service.

Sage has won the magazine's 2023 Award of Excellence, which recognizes restaurants whose wine lists feature an ample selection of quality producers that matches the menu in both price and style.

Patrons can experience Sage's wine list and summer seasonal menu starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 1216 First St. in downtown Sarasota.

"This is our third consecutive year of winning this award and we're honored," said Christopher Covelli, executive chef and co-owner of Sage, in a statement. "Making sure our wine list matches our menu is no small feat, especially considering we offer a new seasonal menu every three months."

Sage's menu is inspired by ingredients and cooking styles from around the globe. Covelli's culinary career spans seven countries.

Why is a famous Sarasota, Bradenton waterfront restaurant closing? Here's what we know

Cortez Kitchen restaurant, bar and live music venue closing — but owner reveals plans to reopen

Cortez Kitchen is nestled along the north Sarasota Bay, next to another one of my favorite restaurants, Swordfish Grill, in the historic Cortez commercial fishing village, which is found off Cortez Road near Anna Maria Island. I've been regularly visiting Cortez Kitchen since not too long after it opened in 2002. It's one of my favorite restaurants, bars, and live music venues around — a place where you happily dine on fresh seafood while listening to live music and enjoying one of the last vestiges of the fabled Old Florida.

During many of my visits to Cortez Kitchen, I would be greeted by the restaurant's jovial proprietor, Joe Oelker, often seated in a corner spot at the bar. The Ohio license plate that reads "Oelker" still hangs from a rafter by a shark's head; however, the man himself is nowhere to be found during my visit on Saturday (Aug. 6), and rumors fly like no-see-ums.

While listening to the locally based, nationally acclaimed blues band Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones fill the air with their upbeat blues tunes, I can't help but overhear a server explain to the couple next to us that the staff has not been paid "in weeks" and that they just learned a few days ago that the restaurant would be closing after business on Sunday (Aug. 6). Deming would later announce from the stage that all the band's tips would be going to the wait staff.

Sunday morning, I reach out to Oelker via social media. He declines to comment and just responds that he is "retiring," while also noting that he's not feeling well and is watching over his mother. I wish Oelker all the best. I also extend my best wishes to his staff at Cortez Kitchen, who now must try to find work during the worst time of the year: the slow summer season.

While Oelker was the proprietor of the Cortez Kitchen business, the waterfront land on which it sits has long been owned by John Banyas. Born and raised in Cortez and on Anna Maria Island, Banyas is a fourth-generation commercial fisherman whose many endeavors include owning and operating the Swordfish Grill restaurant and bar, Cortez Bait & Seafood fish market, and N.E. Taylor Boatworks full-service boat yard. Along with third-generation Cortezian Karen Bell, owner of Star Fish Company and A.P. Bell Fish Co. as well as co-owner of Tide Tables, Banyas has a strong reputation in the area for not allowing profits to supersede preserving the Cortez way of life.

"All the employees will be paid, Joe will pay them, that’s just how it is," Banyas tell me when reached by phone Sunday morning. "He’s gotten a little behind, but I have no problem with Joe. He’s getting up there in years and ready to retire. His mom is sick and he’s spending time with her. He’s had a lot on his plate, and I've been looking to take over the Kitchen for a while."

Following normal business hours Sunday and a 3 p.m. performance by local band Night Watch, Cortez Kitchen will likely be closed "probably a month or more" but "open before season," Banyas said. The name and concept of the restaurant, full-liquor and live music venue will remain "the same as it was" with its "Old Florida style and Cortez character."

Banyas will use his Swordfish Grill staff, led by general managers Lily Banyas (his daughter) and Adam Sears, to oversee Cortez Kitchen. Recently, Banyas did a makeover to Swordfish Grill, featuring a sprawling new tiki bar and covered back patio offering spectacular views of north Sarasota Bay. His plans for Cortez Kitchen, though, don't include any additions. While closed this summer, Banyas said he will do upgrades to things like the kitchen, deck boards and perhaps bathrooms.

Sarasota restaurant announces it's closing permanently after five years in business

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/tri...639a3422&ei=28

A spot specializing in comfort food and craft beer located off of University Parkway, a busy strip for retail and restaurants spanning Sarasota and Manatee counties, has announced it is shutting its doors.

The Public House Tap and Grill, located at 6240 N. Lockwood Ridge Road in the Parkway Collections plaza that also houses Detwiler's Farm Market and Outback Steakhouse, has closed, according to a social media post by the restaurant. Attempts to reach the business for further comment on the closure and the reason for it were not immediately successful.

"It is with a mix of emotions that we announce the closure of The Public House Tap and Grill," the post read. "For nearly six years, we have had the privilege of serving our beloved community with a menu of classic comfort food, craft beer and warm smiles. Our journey has been filled with countless memories, shared laughter, and the joy of seeing familiar faces walk through our doors."

Public House's closure comes after another one of Parkway Collections' most prominent businesses, discount movie theater Parkway 8 Cinemas, shut its doors in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the plaza is still home to many businesses, including other restaurants such as Outback, Metro Diner, InfuZions Thai & Vietnamese Cuisine, Maharaja Indian Cuisine, Appizza A Pizza, and Peach's Restaurant.

Craving a delicious craft beer? Check out these breweries in Sarasota and Bradenton

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/foodanddri...d0c9e68c&ei=30

"It's only been a year since our last local brewery guide, yet there have been several changes in the Sarasota-Manatee craft beer scene since then, including a new taproom opening just weeks ago.

University Town Center recently got a brewery when the Punta Gorda-founded Fat Point Brewing opened last month in the shopping and dining district. It's soon to be followed (though it still hadn't opened yet as of press time) by Venice's 3 Bridges Brewing, which is opening a standalone location after brewing out of Off the Wagon for several years. Sarasota's Big Top Brewing Company and Calusa Brewing are still at work on their new locations as well, while Chef Darwin Santa Maria recently announced plans to reopen Darwin Brewing, which he co-founded, as a new brewery, restaurant and distillery.

Yet even before those open, there are plenty of taprooms to visit locally, ranging from longtime mainstays to newcomers who recently moved to our area. Here's our updated guide to Sarasota-Manatee's breweries, including some of the notable beers they brew, as well as their food and entertainment options. Details are subject to change."
