Players Centre may get to turn Payne Park auditorium into a theater

https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/...r/70220855007/

The Players Centre, which has been looking for a permanent new home for several years, is now focused on a venue that will keep it within the city of Sarasota limits.

The Sarasota City Commission voted unanimously Monday for an early framework of a lease agreement that would allow the area’s oldest performing arts organization to transform the nearly 60-year-old Payne Park Auditorium into a new theater space. The company would pay the city $100 per year for 10 years (with at least two 10-year renewals possible) and $1 from every ticket sold would go to the city.

The deal would bring some money to the city for the underutilized auditorium, which has been used as office space for the city’s parks and recreation department staff for the last few years. City Manager Marlon Brown told commissioners it was only occasionally rented for events before then.

Commissioners voted to move forward with negotiations, which Players CEO William Skaggs said would proceed into the summer.

Brown described it as a “game changer to have the Players occupy the space. I am looking forward to having a long-term relationship with the Players.”

For more than a year, commissioners have been looking at ways to keep the theater company in the city after it earlier rejected a proposal by the Sarasota Orchestra to move to a different part of Payne Park. The Orchestra recently closed on the purchase of a 32-acre site outside city limits just west of I-75 on Fruitville Road. Mote Marine Laboratory also is building a new home outside the city at the University Town Center.

Venice Theatre plans extensive new season while rebuilding from Hurricane Ian damage

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/comp...22db9e5c&ei=44

Even as it rebuilds from the devastating impact of Hurricane Ian last fall, Venice Theatre is moving forward with an ambitious lineup of more than a dozen plays and musicals on its two stages for the 2023-24 season.

All but three of the shows are new to Venice Theatre. Returning are the company’s original annual musical version of “A Christmas Carol, ” along with a new production of the satirical musical “Reefer Madness” last produced in 2009, and the return of “The Cemetery Club,” which was a sold-out hit earlier this year.

The theater will be the first community theater in the area to present “Jimmy Buffet’s Escape to Margaritaville,” and it also will stage the musicals “The Addams Family” and a new spinoff of “The Marvelous Wonderettes” called “Dream On,” featuring a quartet of female singers performing hits from the 1960s and 1970s at their 20-year high school reunion.

Florida Studio Theatre goes surfing with music of The Beach Boys

https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news...776bbe82&ei=43

The music of The Beach Boys and such hits as “Surfin’ USA,” “Barbara Ann,” and “Surfin’ Safari” are sure signs that summer has arrived. Those songs and many more kick off Florida Studio Theatre’s summer cabaret season with the musical revue “The Surfer Boys.”

The Beach Boys “were creating the best music out there,” said Brian Noonan, who developed the concert show as he did “The Jersey Tenors” and a sequel, which were earlier hits in the FST summer cabaret series. “Even though The Beatles were getting more popularity, l think in that period, the mid 1960s, they were really creating some of the finest music out there.”

‘The Surfer Boys’
Created by Brian Noonan. Runs June 13-Aug. 13 in Florida Studio Theatre’s Goldstein Cabaret, 1241 N. Palm Ave., Sarasota. Tickets are $18-$39. 941-366-9000;

Sarasota art boutique opens with goal to give back to community

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/new...74e301d7&ei=41

Sarasota’s newest art gallery aims to bring positivity to the area with its art and art programs.

Aqua Pine Boutique opened Saturday, June 10. Two friends and Sarasota natives wanted to combine their views on mental health, wildlife preservation and passion for the arts.

Jackie Southwick and Amy Vankirk, who both own businesses of their own, are combining efforts to put local artists on display-- while also doing good around the community. Teaching free art classes once a month to help those suffering from grief and needing a healthy way to cope with mental illness. Something they said has been therapeutic ever since a traumatic life event.

Beyond teaching art for those going through a tough time, the boutique also wishes to raise awareness for wildlife conservation. Southwick said proceeds from art sales and special events will go in-part to animal conservation efforts.

New store opens in Venice after Hurricane Ian destruction

https://news.google.com/articles/CBM...S&ceid=US%3Aen

Steve Lane is the proud owner of The Wave Gallery located on Miami Avenue in Venice. The store sells custom t-shirts, artwork and even paints henna tattoos for the Venice community.

Last September after Hurricane Ian wiped away Lane’s former store in Fort Myers, all that was left was a single neon T-shirt where the property used to be. It was his top priority to help out his employees and not let them lose their source of income during a time of uncertainty.

With the opening of this new store in Venice, Lane was able to help seven artists follow their dreams as creators and remain working while he remained focused on making sure his team could stick together.

“I had to find a store to keep everyone employed now that the season was over, and here we are,” said Lane.

With high hopes to continue to share their art and give back to the community, the staff at the new store are excited for what their future holds.

Rejane Davis, one of the seven artists at Lane’s store expressed her appreciation about being a part of the team.

“It gives me a solid foundation I never had. I left Kansas City hoping to find the place I belong and I found that with Steve and the girls and the gallery. Its where I needed to be,” said Davis.

The Wave Gallery is located at 209 Miami Ave W in Venice FL. Hours are 10AM to 5PM Mon-Sat.

The series is part of Lakewood Ranch’s signature programming, led by Nicole Hackel, events and resident experience manager for LWR Communities. “With performances to be held at the pavilion at Waterside Place, Sights and Sounds will bring arts and organizations that are part of our Cultural Coast to Lakewood Ranch,” Hackel said, “which will be a mutually beneficial partnership for our community and the local arts organizations.”
