A free International event will take place October 20, 21, and 22, on the City of Bradenton’s Riverwalk East End at Manatee Mineral Spring Park.

The Back to Angola Festival is being hosted by Oaktree Community Outreach, a local nonprofit, in partnership with Reflections of Manatee. This cultural and heritage festival is a homecoming and celebrates the once-forgotten blended history of Red Bays, Andros (Bahamas), and the Angola Maroon community who resided at the Spring in the early 1800s.

At the Back to Angola Festival, descendants, historians, community leaders, and those local to the surrounding Bradenton area, along with anyone else interested in reveling in the history will come together to commemorate 202 years since this community resided at the Springs.

Participants will hear lively presentations on the history, see cultural demonstrations of basket weaving, and wood carving by the descendants, and experience a live Bahamian Junkanoo workshop complete with live music. Of course, no festival would be complete without the food - Bahamian delights will be on sale such as conch fritters, conch salad, and fish dinners among other delicacies such as coconut cake by local vendors. Also on sale will be art, books, oils, homemade jams, pickled vegetables, and other treats and Bahamian souvenirs.

The City of Bradenton’s Riverwalk East End at Manatee Mineral Spring Park is located at 1312
2nd Ave East, Bradenton 34208, located two blocks north of State Road 64 off 14th St. E.

Event Times are Friday: 6:00 – 8:00 PM; Saturday: 1:00 – 8:00 PM; Sunday: 4:00 – 8:00 PM.

The always popular event was started in 1996 to honor Senator Bill Galvano’s father, the late Phil Galvano, Sr., “A Golf Professional to the Stars” who taught such well-known personalities as Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Tony Bennett, Carol Burnett, and Johnny Carson. Phil Galvano also dedicated much of his time to the youth of Manatee County.

An open house for the second City of Sarasota cultural heritage exhibit in Sarasota City Hall, spotlighting the Sarasota School of Architecture, has been rescheduled for Monday, Oct. 23, city staff has announced.

The original plans for the open house were cancelled because of concerns about effects from Hurricane Idalia, a news release notes.

The Sarasota School of Architecture exhibit “includes models, renderings, reproductions, original blueprints, and archival photographs provided by Architecture Sarasota and Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources,” the release points out.

A lecture will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 in the Commission Chambers, which stands at 1565 First St. in downtown Sarasota, the release adds. The speakers will be Joshua Goodman, manager of the Sarasota County Division of Historical Resources; Architecture Sarasota President Morris Hylton III; and Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources Director Renee Di Pilato.

The Sarasota School of Architecture exhibit will be displayed in the City Hall lobby through June 2024, the release continues.

Sarasota center for seniors among those participating in Walk To End Alzheimer's

For full article:

https://www.fox13news.com/news/saras...alzheimers.amp

At Town Square Sarasota, seniors who may not be able to walk as well as they used to are using their upper bodies to get active.

The goal is to help them physically and mentally.

"We take care of seniors with mild cognitive impairment, and their caregivers. We offer socialization. We offer respite for families," said Center Director Jill Grinnell.

Many of the activities at Town Square Sarasota are focused on those living with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

"It is a cognitive impairment of the brain, and it's a disease that is progressive. It affects short term memory first, decision-making process, their ability to go about their lives every day and how to do tasks in their everyday life," shared Pamela Maren with the Florida Gulf Coast Alzheimer's Association.

With those members in mind, Grinnell and Town Square Sarasota Program Director, Lisa Bracken, are also using the facility for exercise. They are preparing to participate with their team for the upcoming Walk To End Alzheimer's.

"I think it's important because first of all it brings everyone together, and you can walk for somebody that you are supporting, or you can walk for yourself", said Bracken.

The Walk to End Alzheimer's is Saturday, Oct. 28 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota.
