Sarasota County broke ground Thursday on its new $75 million Administration Center just east of Interstate 75-Fruitville Road interchange and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard.
The facility, which will have the address 1 Apex Road, Sarasota, near the roundabout on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, will house the new County Commission chambers and offices, as well as administrative space and offices for the county attorney, clerk and comptroller, communications, human resources, libraries and historical resources and the office of financial management.
The 121,000-square foot structure is also east of what will someday be a new Publix Supermarket – just “steps away from Pub Subs,” one county staffer noted – and north of the Celery Fields, a popular birding and recreation space.
A move from the city of Sarasota
The city of Sarasota has been the county seat since 1924 and county offices have been at several addresses during that tenure. It has been at 1660 Ringling Boulevard since 1995. The county purchased the existing administration center – a vacant General Telephone Co. office building – in 1994. Before that, the county government operated from the historic Terrace Building, built by Charles Ringling 1925 as the Ringling Terrace Hotel.
Facing a projected cost of $49 million over 20 years to maintain and modernize the 1660 Ringling Boulevard structure, county officials opted to find a new home.
