Hi all. I've decided to make my news posts to one thread. Because there's not much else posting activity on this forum I don't want my news posts to seemingly dominate so much. This way it's easier for those not interested to skip it - and all of my news posts won't push other posts way down in the forum. I'm open for suggestions.

Please feel free to comment on the news articles and post other news articles here that I didn't cover.

Sarasota Planning Board says City Commission should deny One Park luxury condo plan

For full article:

One Park Sarasota will finally head to the Sarasota City Commission in December, seeking support for its plan to build an 18-story, 123-unit luxury condominium at the The Quay along Sarasota Bay downtown, but without a favorable recommendation from the city's citizen planning advisory board.

The Planning Board on Wednesday recommended denial of a change to a 2016 development agreement for the site after another three hours of public discussion on the controversial project.

One Park Sarasota developers want to combine two blocks in the 10-block development and build part of the condominium over Quay Commons, the central road in the roughly 15-acre Quay site.

Developer’s plans near Celery Fields confound environmentalists

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/real...33526822&ei=49

Environmentalists in Sarasota County are gearing up for a fight to stop plans for a high-density housing development next to the ecologically sensitive Celery Fields.

The development would be on 26 acres known as the Smith Farm, which sits along Raymond Road, south of Palmer Boulevard and bordering the eastern edge of the internationally recognized bird sanctuary.

Right now, a single home sits on the Smith property, along with some sheds and a few dozen cattle. But negotiations are underway to rezone the land to facilitate its sale to Arlington, Texas-based D.R. Horton, one of the largest homebuilders in the country.

Circuit judge rules for North Port in challenge of ruling contracting city limits

For full article:

Circuit Court Judge Danielle Brewer ruled for the city of North Port this week, denying a citizen’s petition asking her to reject the City Commission’s Oct. 27, 2022 ruling against the West Villagers for Responsible Government’s push to contract the city limits.

Brewer concluded that the commission afforded the residents' group due process, followed the the law and based its decision on competent substantial evidence, as required under the state statute that governs municipal annexation and de-annexation.

John Meisel, chairman of the board of directors for the West Villagers for Responsible Government, said the residents will appeal the decision.

Rift between Gran Paradiso and West Villages district in North Port widens over Ian cleanup

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/ri...0ba9fbd7&ei=61

Tensions between representatives of Gran Paradiso and the West Villages Improvement District led to the treasurer of the Gran Paradiso Property Owners Association being removed from last month's meeting of the West Villages Board of Supervisors after she asked repeatedly for reimbursement of money spent on damage to West Villages property within the subdivision from Hurricane Ian last year.

As of Wednesday, Oct. 11, West Villages officials maintain that proper invoices for the work – including a notarized affidavit signed by Gran Paradiso association president Steve Glunt – had not been submitted.

The government-like board meets again Thursday, Oct. 12.

Sarasota County declared a 'Bill of Rights Sanctuary' in vote tied to 'medical freedom'

For full article:

Sarasota County is now a “Bill of Rights Sanctuary County†that guarantees a patient's rights to choose medical care with informed consent, according to two related resolutions the County Commission approved on a 4-1 vote Tuesday.

Both the Bill of Rights and Medical Freedom resolutions were modeled after ones adopted in Collier County in April.

The Medical Freedoms Task Force of the Sarasota County Republican Assembly Chapter reworked those Collier County resolutions, which were later submitted to Sarasota County for consideration.

This is an opinion piece by Carrie Seidman of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune:

When does 'medical freedom' become 'medical chaos'? Sarasota County may soon find out.

Whether the resolution has the teeth – or legal binding – to tie the hands of medical facilities and professionals is uncertain. But it does open the door to possible risks, among them:

- A patient with a deadly and contagious disease like Ebola or malaria could reject quarantining and treatment and be free to spread the virus at will.

- Patients in a mental health crisis who have been deemed a risk to themselves or others could voluntarily leave the hospital against medical advice.

- Health care practitioners, regardless of expertise or licensing, could prescribe any medications or therapies.

- Personal medical rights could take precedence over any mandates from the World Health Organization and any other international body, or federal or state government.

- All medical or vaccine passports would be prohibited in Sarasota County.

Manatee County residents upset about proposed 115-foot Verizon cell tower being built in community

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/real...ty/ar-AA1i0Y4H

A homeowner wants to build a cell tower on their property, but their neighbors are fighting back.

This is happening in a rural Bradenton neighborhood along 28th Avenue East.

"We are Zone A1, so vegetation, animals, that’s what we want, not a cell tower," neighbor Jodi Samson said.

Samson’s rural Manatee County neighborhood may soon be home to a 115-foot Verizon cell tower.

Dozens of neighbors joined Samson at a meeting Tuesday night with attorney Mattaniah Jahn, who is representing Verizon. Verizon wants to construct the tower on a homeowner’s property.

Officials detail plans for major land swap between New College and SRQ airport

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/real...45494b2e&ei=33

A major land swap is in the works to avert a financial nightmare for New College of Florida that awaits at the end of a 100-year land lease agreement with the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

A new deal could be finalized within the next 90 days.

If the lease is allowed to expire in 2056, the airport-owned land and all of the New College buildings on it revert to airport ownership.

That would cause a massive financial headache for New College, which would be left with two choices: Ask the state for millions of dollars in funding per year for a major rent increase or buy the land and their own buildings back at market value from the airport.

Sarasota nonprofit desperately looks for warehouse space to house 20,000 Christmas toys

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/sa...0ba9fbd7&ei=46

Marine Toys for Tots Sarasota is desperately looking for a safe warehouse to store more than 20,000 Christmas gifts that’ll be given to local families in need.

The organization was told to vacate a 14,000-square-foot warehouse in the Sarasota Square Mall that’s set to be demolished. If the nonprofit does not find a place by Oct. 20, the group will be forced to transfer presents to other counties.

The year-round nonprofit not only supplies Christmas gifts but also assists communities in need after natural disasters and helps other local nonprofits, serving thousands of kids in the community. Coordinator Desiree Jennings has worked with the organization for 30 Christmases. She has never faced a problem like this.

Toys for Tots Sarasota needs a warehouse storage space of 5,000 square feet for their Christmas toy drive. Contact coordinator Desiree Jennings for leads on available space at 941-800-3947 or sarasota.fl@toysfortots.org
