Hi, recently I've seen a few software engineering jobs on dice.com for Sarasota. Unfortunately several are postings from an agency so one can't tell who the actual hiring company is.

I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on tech jobs in the area. Are there large companies headquartered in Sarasota?

I'm also looking at jobs in Pinellas County. Now, the majority of tech jobs are obviously in Tampa proper. I feel like if I get a job in Pinellas and we settle down in a home and I need to change jobs for whatever reason, I could always commute to Tampa if I absolutely had to.

I get the feeling Sarasota is a little more isolated, with the nearest big, big city still being Tampa, but I suspect a Sarasota-Tampa commute would be much more unpleasant than a North Pinellas-Tampa commute (which is already not really ideal?)

Look for Raytheon. I think they are in St Pete. You won't find anything south of the bridge, except maybe answering phones for the cable company.

When you say Bay area, you mean Tampa Bay? There are actually a lot of IT jobs in the Tampa area... a quick search on Dice reveals 741 active hits. This number is much, much larger than other cities like Orlando and Jacksonville.

But basically, I was asking about surrounding areas because I don't necessarily want to live in Tampa proper. St. Pete/Largo has Raytheon which is a major employer and a career type place, where one could work for more than 6 months. Was curious if Sarasota has any major employers....

i think sarasota is more of a very wealthy retirement place. IT in tampa is not good by any means, dice is very misleading, many of those postings are from staffing agencies just looking to collect resumes. check the tampa tribune on sunday, today there were 3 IT jobs listed for the entire bay area which includes sarasota to crystal river. i switched out of IT entirely, it was that or move and moving may be next. i was in net admin though, software engineering is prolly better.

The link you provided is from the year 2000.

As for companies mentioned as examples of "Cyber Invaders" in the article...

" Indigo Investment Systems, one of the fastest-growing Internet firms in the region, makes investment software"
OUT OF BUSINESS? INDIGO INVESTMENT SYSTEMS DOESN'T HAVE A WEBSITE.
Perhaps this is why...
Indigo Investment Systems Settle FTC Charges
Ads Promised High Returns and Low Risk

"Intelliworxx, a 2 1/2 -year-old company, makes mobile, voice-activated computers and went public last year"
OUT OF BUSINESS? INTELLIWORXX DOESN'T HAVE A WEBSITE.
Maybe this is the reason...
Intelliworxx Receives Adverse Judgment in Civil Case. The jury awarded damages of up to $12 million against the defendants including Intelliworxx....

"ParView, a golf course management system, uses golf cart-mounted computers and a global positioning system (GPS) to measure the ball's distance from the hole"
HEADQUARTERS ARE NOW IN TEMPE, ARIZONA

Yeah...umm....don't think the Sarasota area is a hotbed of tech jobs.

OP check out this link from the Florida High Tech Corridor initiative The Council Mission and Overview (http://www.floridahightech.com/aboutUs/councilMission.html - broken link)
Maybe it will provide some information and good luck with your job search.
