I think it's all relative.

but if no one is buying it does not matter...that is my point--
Kohl's must believe that the economy in FL is going to be financially viable for them--
of course they have to grow or die basically to keep generating more sales and capturing market share....but
they have to have more than one store to make transportation costs and other set-up costs feasible ---so others must be planned--
I can see Miami being one site for several stores--despite the housing dump Miami is a large, busy town and there is money in Sarasota even if there are more people than jobs really...
where are their other stores going--those are probably analyzed as the most stable, viable locations in FL for growing retail sales--
Orlando? Jacksonville?
it used to be that developers/investors looked for where the new Lowe's was going in--maybe Kohl's is the new indicator for growth areas...

People have to buy clothes, and Kohls is a discount clothing store. In a failing economy you will get more customers in the discount store than you would in lets say Macys. A failing economy is actually profitable for some businesses.

It's a positive outlook you have there. However, I don't think having Kohl's here is indicative of an upswing in our local economy.

Kohl's expansion, is probably based on the fact that Bealls is taking a big economic hit. Bealls used to have their corner in the market place, leaving no room for competitors.

Bealls is no longer opening stores and is in fact transitioning to catering only to the "older tourist" market in order to maintain a profit. Kohl's is probably seeing this as a way to enter the Florida market slowly and pick up previous Bealls customers who are going to be left out in the cold with Bealls new marketing strategy. Kohl's will probably not expect huge profit margins initially. And I'm sure they are looking at the long term picture. Eventually, some day, the economy will turn around again and when it does Kohl's will be permanently entrenched as the place to shop. Bealls will be an after thought in peoples minds by then, since they forget that most tourists to our area are stingy.

btw....I remember when Kohl's was a grocery store chain lol.

I had no idea Kohl's was in the food business. When was that?

I think Kohl's will do well because the economy of Florida is in a slump and Kohl's have cheap prices are a discount store.

I was on Main St LWR and many of the stores have closed and gone out of business.
What LWR needs is to realize that a lot of people are hurting and those fancy stores they have are just not realistic.People want a bargain.

Yes Kohl's will do well.

Personally, I believe that these types of stores are going to be hurting more and more as time goes by. This economy is causing a change in buying patterns substantially. Many are buying more and more online. Some still have that "go to the mall / store addiction" though. These stores are more and more dependent upon holiday sales to get people in the stores - except for kids who like to hang out / but don't have much money to spend.

I agree, and that is why the new malls are being built as "lifestyle centers" - a destination in and of itself, where people want to come just because it's so nice. The Kohl's here in Lakeland is part of the new Lakelside Village "open-air" mall - it's like a beautiful, clean and new downtown - all lushly landscaped, brick sidewalks benches, fountains, etc. This place is ALWAYS hopping with people of all ages. The centerpiece is a beautiful state-of-the-art multi-screen movie theater.

People will always do some of their shopping in the brick-and-mortar stores, because it's nice to get out of the house especially if you have a nice place to go.

Goodwill & Salvations Army stores are the place to shop!

Even cheaper than Kohl's.

I read that less people are buying online because the increase in gasoline has made it more expensive to ship things.

I think people do like to go out and shop,it is a day out for many.
