It's nice to see our government at work. I've put "People Places and Planning for Prosperity" on my calendar.

Sarasota is quite green. Walking downtown today, I noticed it all the more and its like wow yea, this forum post is so correct. Sarasota as a whole I find has good coffee too like the NW towns.

I just attended one of the talks at the Venice Library. It was very interesting. The 1 hour presentation was on sustainable life style. Tying health, expansion, and the environment to well designed communities.

One of the point that I found most interesting is that town design can have an impact on crime. That by making a town "walkable" reduces crime. Might explain some of the difference between Bradenton and Sarasota.

My husband attended a seminar for his job with Hillsborough County today (in Tampa) and part of it was concerning green building. The experts there once again told everyone that Sarasota was the leader in the state for green building.

meltinjohn - there are LOTS of great places to eat and coffehouses, great bakeries, and there was an article in today's paper about how many organic food stores there are now. Many are also buying "local" produce and meats, which is hard to find here in most of Florida most of our food comes from out of state).

A lot of the new developments have and are being built as "new urban" style, self-contained and walkable, and they have really expanded the downtown. They are also planning to implement "express buses" to move people around town quicker.

Lastly, the new lifestyle center mall which is about to begin building on University Parkway will have a lake, parks, preferred parking for bicycles and small hybrids, and best of all green "living" roofs - it will really be spectacular when built. Lots happening in this neat little city!
