Hey guys- my husband, my toddler and I were looking for a house in Sarasota (just renting)- we loved Palmer Ranch- but nothing in our price-range except townhomes (starting with 1500 Dollar) - so we decided to go more north. We found a beautiful house in a gated community "Harborage" on 53rd Ave (only 1400 Dollar ). We did not love the area around it- but it did not look like crime but I wanted better to have a beautiful house instead of a little townhome- so we got it. And I was thinking we still can easily come to Sarasota. In 3 weeks we are moving and now I started (to late???) with a little research about the area and I am so shocked and scared about everything what you guys write.

Do I have to be afraid now to live there? Gangster-stuff? Oh men. I feel so sick now.

Can I not even drive on the Tamiami Trail to Sarasota with my 3 year old without being scared? Is it better to drive on I75?

I would appreciate if someone could relieve me a little from my fear.

Hi there and welcome to the area! I am not familiar with Harborage, but I don't think you have anything to worry about. We just bought in Whitfield Estates, in south Manatee County, and we drive up US 41 (Tamiami Trail) all the time into Bradenton to go shopping or dining with no problems. We have found only nice people in the area and have not run into crime. That is not to say there aren't some "iffy" type places around, we just don't go to those places! You are also within easy driving distance down I-75 to all kinds of great shopping on University Parkway.

Truly, I believe you will be fine - that sounds like a real nice place. You said 53rd Ave - that is also Highway 70. We go that way all the time to get to the Interstate. I don't see anything that looks like a problem out that way.

Please relax and enjoy your new home!

You're experiencing a well-known psychological reaction called "buyer's remorse." It will go away.

Thank you- that helps a little...

So which places should I avoid?

Also I will need a nice gym with lots of classes- should I better go to Sarasota? Do you have an idea?

I appreciate your help!

Soooo true. Koris honey you will be fine. And, you will say: "Sharon, let's all meet for lunch."

This place is awesome. I am trying to juggle a bit, but when I get time let's all commit to the meetup that they have going on the board.

You live very close to me! There is a lot of trouble in the area, however, there are many people in the area that have lived there for years and are happy. Im renting, but honestly don't mind the area. While it's not a place I would buy You'll be fine, Walmart is safe all hours, as is Cortez and 41. Now, they are safe but would I go driving into the ghetto at midnight? No. As we relocated from IL, we realized that Florida is very diverse and has "bad areas" all over. It's just like that-- but within those bad areas are nice nooks where families reside. Don't panic, just be safe and cautious : )

Hey OObie119,
How much longer till your lease is up. You've mentioned that you're not in a great area before. I hope you can find a nicer / safer place soon. I think the schools need to retain good teachers like you, so I hope you find something great for you and your family!

What kind of trouble? While the others made me feel safe you are doing the opposite...

You're in a Neal community. It's not THAT bad. You just live in Bradenton. Crime is pretty rampant due to the lack of employment and the overabundance of drug related crime.

As long as you are aware of your surroundings, you'll be fine. No where is totally safe. No Wal-Mart is totally safe, no restaurant, not even Anna Maria Island is safe anymore as crime has stretched it's ugly fact across the intracoastal westward.

We've had 25 bank robberies in Bradenton this year. I think that tells a little story. Even Sarasota has had it's share of bank robberies downtown & around town. There's no escaping the fact that people are hurting...therefore, sometimes we have to change the way we conduct our lives. I, personally, wouldn't go out to malls unescorted or with small children after dark. During the daytime, you're not totally out of the woods, but if you conduct yourself in a way that implies business, you'll be fine. New Yorkers have been living like that for decades & it works for them....

I don't really know what to say because times are just downright bad and after reading today's headlines about the public being expected to bail out the banking industry by the ability to borrow more money & start up spending, it just about blew me away...just keep your head on your shoulders and again, you'll be fine.
