I can choose to work at either Manatee Hospital or Blake Medical in Bradenton....anyone care to give opinion of either place or area? What are the communities or areas called w/in close proximity ( say less than 7 miles- even better within walking distance ) to the hospital? Are they nice and safe areas? I'd be working 630am til 7pm....

I was born in Manatee Hospital as was my oldest daughter. I'm not sure about the areas anymore. I haven't lived there for a while. I think SuncoastGuy lives somewhere in Bradenton.

If you are considering walking you would be in a much better area if you choose Blake. Manatee Memorial is downtown and on the edge of *ahem* not the nicest part of Bradenton. Blake is in NW Bradenton and the area around it is much nicer. You won't find a gated community near by, just mostly well maintained older homes. Blake is located in zip code 34209.

Manatee is a total knife & gun club ER...they take in all the indigents, it's located downtown Bradenton, has been updated continuously. My Xhusband was an MD there.

I do believe Blake has the right to refuse if you are uninsured. It's on 59th street between Cortez & Manatee Avenue. Many of the docs that work out of Blake also have privileges at MMH. Same docs different hospitals.

The surrounding neighborhoods to the west and northwest are upscale... You can live out on AMI and commute as well....59th towards Cortez has a nice YMCA, park & numerous apartment complexes that have been sold and renamed due to shady characters.

Both hospitals have their problems. For safety and walking you definately want Blake. Lots of politics in both, Columbia/HCA owns Blake so that should speak for itself if you want to work for a big corp. As for having the same docs at both hospitials is untrue. General physicians, surgeons and pediatricians etc. can work out of both some choose to only work out of one. Radiologists, anesthesiologists, pathologists etc. work specifically for one hospital or the other. Manatee has a behavorial health area (special locks to get in and get out), blake does not. So the psychologist are out of Manatee. You will definately have the knife and gun club at Manatee and I believe that it is a more like a Level 1 trauma unit where as Blake doesn't get alot of gunshots, they do aneurysms, brains, hearts just like Manatee but generally some really bad cases will go to Manatee over Blake. True trauma gets airflight to Bayfront and both have helicopter landing pads for this. Understaffing and complaints by both nurses, lab tech, radiology techs and patients are at both hospitals.

Actually I'm an OR nurse for over 10yrs now. It is so wonderful to be able to get the real deal from City-Data folks! Picking where you work is huge! I'll keep checking in at my first pics of Sarasota Memorial and Doctors'. I've only gone to their online job center to check for positions, but perhaps calling the unit manager would be more effective. Anyway, I do want to live very closeby work if possible and those places above just don't sound like what we'd be looking for at all.

If I had a choice between Sarasota or Bradenton I would for sure choose the Sarasota neighborhoods. I really like the older quaint downtown area surrounding Sarasota Hospital. The landscaping is mature, the homes are unique. I just like the whole vibe better.

Wow! I wouldn't want to walk or drive anywhere near SRQ Memorial. Neither choice in SRQ would be walkable, too much traffic.

Why don't you become a travelling nurse for awhile. You can travel to the locations and work there 3-6 months. They pay for alot of your expenses and apartment and you are only committed to be there for a short while. If you are good they may ask you to stay. During season - Dec - May I believe they hire travelling nurses. Then you don't have to move permanently. I agree I would not want to walk to SRQ Memorial. Don't forget Lakewood Ranch is another option it is in a pretty nice area.
