I used to live in Laurel Park from 1985 - 1997. Back then half of the properties were owned by slum lords who didn't care who they rented to and the crime was off the charts. We really, really hated living there. What I DID love was the proximity to downtown and Island Park. The neighborhood was just starting to "turn" (as in gentrify) when we left it; however, while today it is considered a "trendy" and somewhat upscale neighborhood, I think it is grossly, grossly overpriced. I don't know if the crime is a whole lot better than it was, there are transients from downtown who cruise through and "camp" in some vacant woods there, recently two historic homes burned caused by vagrants. Now I am sure some people love it there, but I would have no desire at all to live there again. Even if the crime is not bad, the lots are very small for the most part and houses are on top of each other (no privacy, lots of noise) and there are STILL quite a few rentals in the area.

There are other parts of downtown that I consider much nicer - I would personally prefer the Burns Court area - quiet with small streets, West of Orange Ave. Also, the areas West of the Trail but just south of downtown near Southside Village are nice. Much more stable, IMO.

Remember, this is all my own personal experience and opinion. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your generous reply. I'll check out your suggestions when i'm there next week.

I'm still at the "just looking" stage, but would eventually be interested in buying - maybe 2-3 years from now, after the market has hit bottom.

I think Laurel Park has done a big turn around...they have a cute little park where they have get togethers/bands, the houses are being kept up & it's got a real neighborhood feel to it....
