My fiance has been living in a condo in Sarasota for work for about 16 months, but I'm moving down with him from NJ at the end of May. We're looking to move into a new place together, but I just had a question about safety before we sign a lease.

We found a really nice, affordable house in the Alta Vista neighborhood that appears to have pretty much everything we're looking for. Everything seems perfect, except that my fiance mentioned that many houses in the neighborhood are currently vacant and trying to find renters (I won't be able to see the houses before we move in because of my graduate school schedule). This makes me slightly nervous, especially considering that I'm moving from a region of the country where vacant=economically depressed. How safe would it be to move into a neighborhood where every other house is for rent or for sale? Is it unsafe that the house doesn't have any sort of security system, and would it be better for us to live in a doorman building if we have these concerns? (we'd like to stay close to downtown)

Again, I'm not a nervous person, and I've lived in some neighborhoods in NY and NJ with a pretty bad rap... I've just never lived in a house and I don't really know the area. Can anyone help?

Are you renting or buying? If your buying does the neighborhood have hoa fees? Be careful if it does you will most likely be picking up the tab for all those homes if no one is paying for them. Where in NJ are you moving from? I am originally from there and live in Sarasota now.

Nope, we are renting. We already checked to make sure the house wasn't in foreclosure... it's an investment property and the owners live elsewhere in Sarasota.

I'm moving from Bergen County, but I used to live in New Brunswick for college, and then in East Harlem for a little while Florida will be a big change!
