Hello all,

I need some help. After a loooooong time of job craziness my husband's company has decided to stay in Florida. I am so grateful!! I love this state! We have the option of relocating to the Sarasota area with his job and to my excitement the charter organization I work for has a location there as well.

To make a long story short... We are hispanic and are wondering if there is diversity in Sarasota? By no mean am I trying to start a debate; but I have lived here long enough to know that some places are more accepting then others I have two sons going into the 10th and 6th grade. I don't want to relocate to an area where they wouldn't be accepted or make friends.

I have read many of the posts on Sarasota and the opinions are quite conflicting. Any positive takes would be appreciated!

Thanks and enjoy the beautiful day

I think you wouldn't have any problem at all. My older kids (10th and 5th grades) have several Hispanic, African American, Asian friends that live in Sarasota and they're just treated as one of the crowd at school. It doesn't seem like anyone really notices at all. They go to school in Osprey but many of their friends live in downtown Sarasota, Siesta Key, Palmer Ranch, etc.

I'm not really sure how it would be at one of the other schools but I would assume pretty similar. I think Sarasota in general is pretty tolerant of other cultures and lifestyles.

I'm a native of SW Florida and have lived in the area my whole life as a child and as an adult and I've raised my kids here, so I think I have a pretty good handle on the situation. I'm sure, like any place, your gonna have your handful of intolerant people.

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Sarasota is a very cosmopolitan little city - you will find people from EVERYWHERE here - not only that you will find people from all walks of life - young, old, families, rich, poor, artists, hippies, intellectuals and on and on. Sarasota has a circus heritage and an Amish/Mennonite village. And we have plenty of "hispanic" people of all different varieties (myself included).

Welcome to Sarasota! You are going to LOVE it here, I promise!
