What does homeowners (hurricance) insurance run in Sarasota for the typical house? What are property taxes per year?

Anyone on this site have moved from Coastal Cal to Sarasota and can comment on how they like it?

I definatley need to make a trip...but I'll probably wait until November.

Hi there!

I recently moved back to Sarasota from SouthBay area and while we miss certain aspects of it, Sarasota is like a year round vacation. The area is very laid back, and there is always something going on as far as activities. I understand what you are looking for, and I believe you can find it here. The beaches are beyond beautiful, the water temp. amazing. The atmosphere downtown is vibrant, and there are plenty of young professsionals your age in the area. I know, I am friends with a bunch of them. And no, they are not all married. I am 33 and find myself very blessed to call Sarasota my home.
There are more Zagat rated restaurants located in SRQ, than anywhere in Florida. The Art and Culture scene in Sarasota is quite unique as well.

It would be great if you could plan a trip down, I don't think you will be disappointed. SOFLGAL is very helpful and I am sure could find you your own piece of paradise here. Best of Luck!

I also live in San Diego but spend a small portion of each winter in Sarasota with friends who live there. I just turned 41.

Sarasota is definitely warmer than SD in the winter and the water temp is much warmer. Sounds like you are looking for someplace "balmier" than SD in the winter, and Sarasota is at least a step in that direction.

As for a "hip progressive vibe", I do not sense that at all in Sarasota.

There are definitely going to be plenty of older snowbirds in Sarasota in the winter months, so you will need to be prepared for that demographic.

Overall it is a nice enough place with some nice beaches and warm water. I know sometimes SD gets a "boring" label slapped on it compared to LA or SF - I will say that if you find yourself bored at all in SD, you are going to be bored to tears in Sarasota. It's not really a "city" per se, I think there are only about 50K people living close-in, compared with about 1.5 mil in SD.

It's actually a fairly uncommon combo that you seem to be seeking - balmy winter weather and a hip progressive place. I would probably be exploring neighborhoods around Miami and maybe even take a look at Key West if you want a good shot at fitting those criteria. Or if you can work from anywhere, I would seriously look internationally. Good luck!
