Thank you. We have lived in Sarasota for 35 years. Time sure does fly by!

Our place in PC is on wide, deep water, not a canal. I'm going to have the boat lift about 15-20' out from the seawall so depth will never be an issue.

Oh! That's cool. I know you have a deep draft on your boat. But, technically you will find that there is no "deep water" in pc! Once you get here, you will agree to not use that term in SWFL!

Do you ever fish from your boat?

BH, my boat draws about 3' max. Hopefully I can get around, even in winter as long as I stay "on" the "beaten path". By deep water, I meant 6' or more. I measured the depth in front of the new house in 10' increments in May. We're good since we can go out pretty far with the lift. And no, have never fished on my boat. We use it for cruising, vacationing, and drinking I have friends up here that have fishing boats on Lake Michigan so when we want to go fishing we call them up. When they feel like a cruise or just "hanging out" they call us. It all works out.

That's what I was thinking! We're heading down on Thursday.

I'll be there Monday night, but need to immediately go to the store and get an aero bed and some groceries. The house is completely empty. I'll be there for a week this time.

Sold my boat up here in NY. Heading down in a few weeks to rent for awhile, so we can look for a home to purchase. I will then want to purchase a boat that would be good for Nearshore/Inshore and also flats fishing w/ a pole. Any suggestions on boats and dealers. Thanks.

Nope, but they are all over the place. I'm down here now. Good choice for down here! Make sure you have one with a live well, and a wet bar!

It's a buyers market right now. Do your homework and read. Once you decide what you want, there are good deals on Craiglist and boat trader magazine. Hang out at the local boat ramps and watch.
I don't know how old you are or your experience with pushpoles, but I would recommend a trolling motor as well.

Your best bet for all round fishing is a bay boat. The class of the bay boat type is Pathfinder. You will see many of them on the local waters. Most bay boats will have 12-15 inch draft and can provide a dry ride in 1-2 ft seas.

If you want to pole the flats you are really looking at a specialty boat. You want a boat with a low profile so that the effect of winds are minimized. Light weight, hull weights of 600 - 900 lb are typical. These smaller boats can go outside to fish just off the coast, but without gunnels it's easy to have waves wash over the deck.

I fish a BayCraft 185 flats edition which is built in Deland FL. It floats in 9 in of water and as a surprisingly soft and dry ride.

Two accessories that you may want to consider are a trolling motor and a hydraulic jack plate. It takes a bit of practice to move a boat quietly over a flat with a pole.
