I know this is not the Tampa forum but we fly in/out of TPA when coming to visit our daughter in Venice area--
have been checking rental car rates for trip at end of July and they are just flat out high---
is there anything special going on in Tampa area that would be drawing lots of rental cars out of airport stock?
am I just trying too soon
I have not found anything lower than 185 plus tax and fees and that is for the compact cars...
trying rental car coupons but don't have company discount code to use...
am I missing something--is tourist traffic higher than expected?

There was an interesting segment on the radio about rental car rates. Companies have shed 400,000 vehicles from their inventory and are keeping cars much longer on the road. We rented a car last week that had 40K miles on it. A few years ago, most cars in rental had a 25K limit.
I would check out Dollar rent a car. Surprisingly, most crossovers like a RAV4 or CRV or Jeep Liberty are 1/2 the cost of a compact car. The agent at the counter said you have to investigate all the companies now. All have different policies and price structures.

thanks for the suggestion
I think the rental I took today was with Dollar but I have not seen any SUVs large or small with rates discounted that much
I know they have shed cars and are supposed to be hurting--
I think the problem is that they have to honor their agreements and maybe sweeten them with their corporate clients who do have large accounts so the other renters -- like me--with no special discount is paying more full fare...

Wow! That is high. Is that for one day or the whole weekend? i decided a year ago to just buy a used car and keep it down here as our Florida vehicle.

Is the $185 for a weekend or the entire week? If a weekend, yes, it is high. If for a week, it is a steal! I normally pay around $300/week, and that's with a 20% off Hertz discount.

Another thing to remember is that rentals are ALWAYS more expensive at airport terminals. If there is a rental location nearby, maybe they will pick you up at the airport. You could save big $$$ renting off-site

Default Check out Alamo

I too fly in and out of TPA and make my way down to SRQ. I just booked a car for $276 for a week thru Alamo, which is off airport. They have shuttles circling constantly. I show Fri - Sun the last weekend in July at $156 for economy

pick Friday noonish -- return Tuesday about 1:30
I can't get a weekly rate with those days

I will try Alamo--but I bet that is the price I will get for fewer days
and that IS their airport site address even if you ride the shuttle to get there a mi or so away
did you use the Alamo site itself to book?

it is too much of a hassle to rent from another location and pay extra to return to the airport and if you have to get someone to drive you to the airport when you return where you rented that just means you have to waste more time on the return to the airport trip...
