I have to wonder why they made such big expansions when they had a hard time keeping stores around in the first place.....right now with the economy some sections of that mall look like a ghost town.

The place lost all of its personality when the Westfield mall-opoly bought it. Does anyone else remember the nice fountain in the middle of the old Sarasota Square Mall? Those were the days.....

Anyone else who's lived here long enough miss the old mall?

I don't miss it. The expansion and upgrades had to be done, they couldn't draw the kind of retail shops they needed, everyone was going up to Southgate, but they were also losing a lot of business to International in Tampa. The food court was pathetic at best and the aging movie theater was charging the same prices as it's newer competitor downtown. The whole shopping experience was just downright dismal.

To me Sarasota Square was always a mall for the whole family to go. A think they addressed that nicely when they renovated it. Me and my girlfriends were especially pleased with the Family Bathroom, changing/nursing stations provided in the large room by the movie theaters. Before if you needed to nurse, you would have to go out to your car, or go home. Not really a retail winner.

You probably are reminiscing about mall in it's heyday. I know it is quite empty now and with Dillards pulling out will be even worse. But I think if they hadn't already done the renovations, added the new teenage stores, redone the movie theater and food court, there would most likely be a completely empty box in foreclosure sitting there right.

I'm new to the area so I don't remember the old mall. I live just up the street from Sarasota Square and don't go there very often. It doesn't have many of the stores I like and with Dillards leaving that's one less. It is a virtual ghost town every time I go. I much prefer Southgate. Whatever happened to the mall that was supposed to open up north with Nordstrom, etc?

The recession happened.

Sunshine, if you think it is bad now, you should have seen it before. I think the most action that went on at the old mall was the cute little granny's walking laps around it every morning in the AC! =P

It's so sad to see the mall empty, and up and down 41 all the small business that have gone under.

Yes, I agree it's really sad. I hate to see all of those empty buildings. I've been on the websites for the Sarasota County Economic Development Corportation and Sarasota Tomorrow (an initiative of the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce). It looks like as a result of the recession they are finally starting to realize that we can't just depend on housing, tourism and retirees to fuel the local economy. I'm thinking of getting involved with one or both of these organizations.

All they do is create more low-paying jobs. There are no legitimate professional careers to "fuel" whatever "economy" there is here.

Holy cow. I had no idea Dillards was also closing the Sarasota Square location. That's a huge blow to the mall.
