I would also be interested in a recommendation for a good ISP. I'm looking for something fairly quick and reliable. Can't stand ATT customer service. Comcast has some pretty fast speeds available. Any experience with them?

Sorry, don't mean to bust into your thread

Default Broadband

Check out Verizon FIOS. I just got it and its standard speed is 45mps. I was paying extra for less than that with Comcast.

I just have the Comcast basic ($25/mo) and it is 54 Mbps. Perfect for my work and general use.

Harbor Hopper how are you able to get 54mbps with Comcast for only $25/mo? Is that some sort of special? The reason I ask is that I currently have the Comcast "Economy Tier" internet service - and I currently get a download speed of about 1.5mbps. I pay $26.95/mo for the Comcast Economy tier.

Not a special, and no contract. That's what they offered 1 1/2 yrs ago for a "basic" internet I guess. I have no idea what my download speed is. I just know the running speed almost always says 54 Mbps

I'm guessing that the 54 Mbps you see is the speed noted on your wireless card.

That's the theoretical max speed between your machine and the wireless router. From the router out to the internet you're probably not getting more that 10-15 Mbps if you are on a lightly used node (cable gets slower as more people in your neighborhood use it).

You can test down and up speeds at a number of places like Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
I'd test from a couple of different servers to get a better sample.

I live in SWFL and travel 11 eastern States for work. I've always been happy with my Verizon broadband card. Work pays the bill but I think it's $40 a month for unlimited use. At home we have CenturyLink, formerly Embarq. I have been very pleased with their WiFi in my home. The phone line and WiFi cost me $78 a month.

I want an iPad 2 so bad ...... not in the budget yet but I will get Verizon broadband on it.
