I am looking for something to park a boat on . It would be in our back yard .I would definetly have a border to keep it contained. I am wondering about price compared to rock. Who would you order it from ? Does it stick to shoes worse than gravel ? I see it every where down there.
Thanks in advance for any info.
Pat & Jennifer

Call Venice Minerals (941) 484-5133. Ask them about a product called Driveway Mix.

Pretty common in Louisiana too. Two (2) basic types: oyster shell is large and takes longer to succumb to the earth (sink in). Reef shell is smaller, like silver-dollar sized and will pack pretty tight. The reef shell is more like crushed limestone after being driven on.

Either type is dredged up from the gulf, so it's plentiful compared to rock.

Pat, I just checked into using shells in lieu of stone in the landscaping project I'm doing at home. This is what I learned.

Crushed shells are much cheaper. Stone requires that a landscape fabric, or silt type fabric be installed prior to placing the stone because the stone is so heavy that it will eventually work its way into the soil, and you end up adding more. Plus stone is about $20/yd more than shells - depending on the expensive selection you (or your wife ) might choose.

Shells reportedly do a much better job as a weed barrier than stone, they break down, and totally seal over the dirt, so weeds don't get a chance to take hold. ((Now, I am still skeptical since I've seen weeds grow right on top of concrete barriers, where there is not dirt)), but that is what I've heard, and I really do see less weeds growing on shell beds than on stone beds.

With our new project, we are using the more expensive washed river stone. But, weeds are still not that difficult to control if you spray it once in a while with Round Up (or some other weed killer).

Soooo, you're really hooked and gonna get that boat! Have you heard more about that job opportunity? Hope so! Pretty soon, we'll have a boating regatta, if all my friends start getting thier boats!
