BTW, I thought they shut down 99% of the pill mills......with some new laws. Haven't seem them around in years - they brought in some trash from the mid-south, but only for a day or two.

Heck, we need those lists from you!

Florida- has always been the place to go to either escape who you are/were or to find some new business in a place where the line between the law and the criminals is often blurred. Heck, the police in the tiny village that my parents live in helped themselves to 10's of millions of dollars in drug money which they had no right to even chase (they started flying all over the USA and shaking down drug dealers)....

This is why Florida Man is so popular:
https://www.reddit.com/r/FloridaMan/

Back to the subject - seriously, there is still nothing wrong with your average honest citizen like myself wanting to walk, bike, drive or live unaccousted. So safety matters.

Let me give you two pure anecdotal examples of why "shady" or transitional areas of SRQMana doesn't mean much at all. People make or break an area in re being "safe". Character is paramount.

I personally discovered and know a blonde, attractive woman residing in an expensive house in LWR, and drives of course one of those white Benzes. Something didn't quite add up with her, so I used my contacts and experience only to discover that she had an SEC indictment and jail time in Boston for embezzlement from 3 stock broker's CMA accounts (writing checks to herself, etc etc) while being employed at Merrill's Boston Office. She then moved to PINELLAS county, got jailed for conversion, obtaining merchandise under false pretenses, check kiting and a couple of other charges. She then discovers "Sarasota". She is now working as a self-described Microsoft Security expert...LOL.

Second case. I personally know a family living in a 850k house in University Park. Father is an international attorney/shyster, lived in NY, London andhas a place in CA. His nice looking daughter, driving one of those fancy Mustang convertibles has been arrested a few times in Sarasota County, and jailed for numerous drug charges. Later discovery revealed she is a very high paid escort working on the web (hooker) out of Sarasota, and out of an apartment just south of San Francisco - and flies back and forth. She also has an innocuous-sounding website.

I won't get into a few LONGTIME SRQMana "jewelers" (a few with pawn licenses) who buy, fence, and transport stolen jewelry and diamonds nationally and internationally.

In short, many of the "homeless" may suffer somewhat by their own hand, they are hardly my focus on the "character" of this community. I've been here too long and know better.

Some of the most no-good people can also be found in the overall banking and finance community as well. Just ask the Department of Finance, or Agriculture, or the SAO's office, or Insurance Department, or the SEC, or FINRA.

I know of an ENTIRE family who was running a huge scam in LTC insurance (and related products) essentially in another state, got pretty much kicked out of that state, changed their company's name slightly and developed a web of LLC's here in Florida, and SET UP the entire family's business (father, sons, inlaws, children) here in Sarasota. Each of the principals purchased huge expensive houses in LWR, they are still under investigation.

How about those Sarasota Deputies......it only makes sense that this guy and the woman and the guys who threw peanuts to the homeless guy with cuffs on are not "the only" bad guys around.....

When LE jumps on old ladies and tries to kill them....now THAT'S some unsafe neighborhood.

The one thing everyone needs to know about Florida is that it's the "Sunny Place For Shady People". Person for person, the homeless are probably more honorable than the type of person you refer to. Lots of lazy people in this world who make their fortunes in sleazy ways......

Still, the lady with the "benz" isn't likely to knock me over the head when I take a walk. In fact, she likely never walks anywhere.

Hey, in the day and age when the POTUS BIL was a NY Shyster who served Jail time......and the POTUS himself is known to deal is various forms of the "young woman" business, it's tougher and tougher to find nirvana.

Maybe y'all want to move up to the cozy New England town I hail from?

We need some family values in this world....

I'll leave politics alone. Safety concerns are not limited to the issue of a few confrontational "homeless". That's my point.

I'd rather be confronted on a public street by a "homeless woman or man", than an attorney getting kickbacks or my money on a real estate transaction, or a stockbroker stealing from my account, or a drunk deputy hitting me head on and his buddies covering it up (that DID happen several times in the region),,,or having one spouses attorney collude with a female judge in a divorce case in order to fully screw the male spouse financially (yep that's happened too)..

The lack of character is a lack of character, period, full stop. that's the real danger around here like never before.

Should I mention all of the Air Conditioning companies here that screw the elderly every year, year end year out? or the scam A/C telephone call centers trying to get in your home to s c r e w y o u********* and scare you?

Dang, I'm looking for a decent A/C mechanic....

So far I've been lucky with my other contractors (screen porch, plumber), but I get your drift.

Ain't much we can do about society's problems as a whole - but it is possible to pick a place to live that is quiet.

I've been on all sides of that issue. My first house was in Phila. at 22nd and Christian. Then Germantown and some other similar places.

In the 40 years since I've lived where I can leave my cars and doors unlocked (at least while I am home)....and I definitely prefer the later.

Chain Saw Al lived in Hilton Head in the same gated community as my parents. He's so hated that even all the (wall street) crooks hate him. They should make people like him register and show them on a map as "capitalist predators".

The upscale scammers described above live everywhere in the country, though they may be a bit more prevalent in Florida, attracted by sunshine, no state income taxes, and a large elderly population that can be ripped off (perhaps) a bit more easily than a younger crowd.

Here in Michigan, in Grand Rapids specifically, the Amway company, founded in 1959 by Richard DeVos, which launched many other companies over the years, Quixtar, for example, were fined $56 million in 2010 as settlement for a class action suit against Quixar and some of its top level distributors in CA, alleging fraud, racketeering and an illegal pyramid scheme. Richard's son, Dick Devos, former CEO and president of Amway, is married to Betsy DeVos, the former GOP chair in Michigan, and now Secretary of Education.

Not trying to make a political statement at all, rather making the point that scammers come in all stripes.

Re: homeless, I was actually a bit surprised when I visited Tampa/St Pete last year that I didn't see more homeless around the beaches. Maybe I wasn't there long enough, or maybe they patrol Treasure Island pretty well and keep it cleaned up in that regard. I did see plenty in downtown St Pete, hanging around the parks, and in the downtown area. Hard to avoid them in any warm weather city, it seems.

I won't even get into the criminal pain docs, attorneys, dentists, accountants who are HUGE substance abusers/drunks who reside "west of the trail". I could name names about the proliferation of bogus, slimy, scheming criminal actors who wear suits and drive SL550's and 7 Series.

Pick your poison. I know better - seen the shift in "what kind of no-good people are around" since 1978.

At least some of the homeless are transparent in their malaise. This town is not problem-free up or down the social strata.
Well that's the problem too.. Just because people have money here, it doesn't buy class. They kind of correlate with the low end bums who are sketchy. I know from seeing.

OMG I was just waiting for someone to mention UNIVERSITY. It appears so nice but theres people hiding out in some of those complexes no doubt. I didn't think there was diversity as far as creative types or musicians though but a few eccentrics hide out in them sure.

OHH I also knew a guy who was in Seminole too.. he was conservative, kind of like an Italian redneck type maybe, he liked different bands but his parents had money and were supporting him in the condo he lived in. It was an expensive complex in Seminole sort of like some of those ones in University. Is this what you're referring to? you may have a few alcoholics and depressed musician types living in these nice complexes? This situation seems similar to me for some reason.

And I also met one of these scheming types here in Sarasota off University.. dressed up for work and has had riches, but was a real lowlife behind all that and was quite broke when I came across him. This was in houseshares.. NOW DOES EVERYONE SEE WHY SOME OF MY OPINIONS ARE NEGATIVE??? This is the world I see!

Where West of the trail are you talking now? toward the water? St Armands?

My mom wants to move to Cape Cod.. do you recommend Barnstable or anywhere like that? I hardly ever went to the Cape, just to visit once in a GREAT while. All I did was eat seafood, I'd look at the shops, get bored then leave. I grew up in Billerica/Chelmsford though.. Its an overall nice area esp Chelmsford. And then Nashua.

I dare to say though that Sarasota has more crime than Lowell.. would you agree or disagree? As far as overall crime, not always violent crime though.

Wow all this is bad. So when you go out, you never know how long people are staying, if they're coming or going or what. Unbelievable. I got news for you though, they keep it all behind closed doors around University. You wont always know unless someones your next door neighbor maybe and even then you wont know all the time.
