The burns are ongoing. Check the DH facebook page for daily updates.

This is from the June 7 press release:

Successful Controlled Burn
Favorable weather conditions allowed responders to conduct a successful controlled burn operation. As part of a coordinated response that combines tactics deployed above water, below water, offshore, and close to coastal areas, controlled burns efficiently remove oil from the open water in an effort to protect shoreline and wildlife.**

By the Numbers to Date:

• Approximately 1.09 million gallons of total dispersant have been deployed—779,000 on the surface and 317,000 subsea. More than 469,000 gallons are available.

• More than 125 controlled burns have been conducted, efficiently removing a total of more than 3.2 million gallons of oil from the open water in an effort to protect shoreline and wildlife.

I smelled gas that smelled like light fluid on some nights, at first my family thought I was just crazy but few days later when they were outside at night they smelled it as well.

BP is planning to burn the captured oil instead of sending it to refineries:
BP Plans to Use EverGreen Burner to Burn Oil in Gulf | Inhabitat - Green Design Will Save the World (http://inhabitat.com/2010/06/09/bp-plans-to-use-evergreen-burner-to-burn-oil-in-gulf/ - broken link)
We have been lucky in the last few days since the wind has not been directly from the west, but it appears now that they will be burning much more oil, and 24-7 instead of intermittently. Regrettably, the logical result would be more smoke than we have had so far.

This just makes no sense at all!
Why are they not sending it to refineries?
I wonder if it might have something to do with contamination from all the dispersants they threw into the Gulf - dispersants which I think make it harder to contain the oil. Another bad idea.

I agree. If they didn't disperse it, it would be costly to clean up, but after they get a system in-place they could probably clean it up in a much more efficient manner. Althought it might be worse at first, I think in the long run, they are shooting all those that live in the gulf in the foot!

Heard people who live near the water in Louisiana and Alabama are getting sick now from the fumes. We have so many elderly with breathing problems and so many other people who suffer with similar ailments in our area...Heaven help us if we start to get fumes like they do.
