My boyfriend (26) and I (22) are looking into relocating to Sarasota from Northern New Jersey. Could anyone please recommend the best areas for us to look for an apartment in the $700 -$900 range ? We would have a car but it would be ideal to be close to public transportation. We are very active and love the arts and both work in the graphic design/video production fields. Any information regarding the cost of living (compared to North Jersey) as well as quality of living would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

we just moved from jersey to englewood (30 mins south of sarasota) a couple months ago. the cost of living is much lower than NJ. our car insurance is half of what it was. while we do not have the same size house our taxes are much lower, 14K vs 3K. gas is slightly higher. food costs about the same. electric is less. no gas for heat. phone and cable the same. quality of life--HUGE.

where about in NJ are you.

We are currently living in Wayne. The apartments and costs of living in general is so expensive.
It seems that FL is so much more reasonable. How do you like it so far? How was your move? How does it compare to NJ?

I don't think Sarasota is the Cheapest place to live in Fla, but from my limited experience, it is the nicest.

You're in Wayne? Are you Willy Pat alums or students?

Check out Gillespie Park, Laurel Park areas downtown. SRQ has great public transportation. The cost/quality of living here far outweighs living in NJ! I used to live in Wayne myself, ages ago.

SRQ is a big art town. There's lots of affordable areas of housing here.

You may run into a famous (Most famous?)Willy Pat alum down in Sarasota - Dick Vitale.
He doesn't publicize it much, but he got his Master's Degree there.
He lives in SRQ fulltime, and can often be found hanging out at the Broken Egg at breakfast. Really nice guy, always willing to chat - and he actually enjoys talking abt WP!

My son graduated there abt 8 or 9 yrs ago. Broadcasting.
Not many people have heard of that school.

I liked the Laurel Park area too. But I preferred a condo, so bought elsewhere.

I live near the GWB and recently bought in Sarasota up near University. Any rental that's not on the Keys is probably going to be much more reasonable than north NJ. Central A/C to cool an apartment will be cheaper than wall unit A/C. Areas are pretty compact so it's easy on the gas bill. You are about the age of my son who visited during March. He found a lot of nice hang-outs (bars, clubs) and all kinds of live music if you are into those scenes. We found it very reasonable there compared to north NJ.

From quickly looking at apartments in Laurel Park through Craigslist... it seems very nice!

The cost of living up here is getting to be insane!

Oh wow! I didn't realize he went to Willy P.
Willy P is a great school. I feel more locals go to the school and that could be why it's lesser known.
