I've just signed up with the Red Cross to volunteer for various things in the Savannah Chapter. Does anyone have any stories or experiences they can share with volunteering for them? I don't really know much about it or what to expect. I told them I'd be willing to help out with just about anything.

My Mother worked with the Red Cross in the 50's through the late 60's, as a Grey Lady with the U.S.Army. She worked in the Well Baby Clinics in the various Military Hospitals where we were stationed. She loved it, and she made me proud of all the hours she put in to vollunteer. Good luck to you, I know you will make a difference in other's lives!!!

My Mom got fired by the supervisor when she worked at the Red Cross. Back in the mid 50’s a man came in who needed help with feeding his family. The Red Cross couldn’t or wouldn’t help him. As he was leaving the building, my Mom saw him starting to go out the door - rejected and in need of help. She gave him all she had which was only $5 at the time, but it would buy milk, bread, and some food. Her boss saw this and fired her.

Well, I'm hoping things have improved in the last 60 years. Sorry to hear what happened.

I was a volunteer when I was a teen in the eighties. We did disaster relief whenever there was a house fire or other incident. I got certified in a lot of medical procedures and it impacted me so much I went into the Air Force as a medic. Great experience overall.
