We just moved to the Parkside neighborhood last week. Love everything--except the rats that scurry in from the alley. (I am a quivering mass of horror when confronted with rodents, snakes and bats.) Since they definitely seem to be entering via the alley, will the city handle this?

That's an older section of town. Rats are a problem in old areas. Don't know whether the city will do anything or not. The best thing to do right now is get an exterminator for your house and keep poison bait like De-con in the attic.

Good luck!

Parkside seems to have always had rats. I'm in agreement with Padgett2 that you can call the City but I'm not sure that they can do anything.

You can reduce the problem by hiring a good pest control outfit who specializes in prevention. I once had a nice conversation with a guy who worked for this company: Moles, Snakes, Woodchucks, Bees, Wasps, Hornets: Critter Control Animal Removal

I'm sure they're not the only company who provides these services but they certainly educated me on the subject.

This would be the perfect time to get an outside cat or terrier.

I'm gonna guess the city isn't going to be too serious about the rats since they're ultimately not going to be able to stop the rats unless they're willing to be out there every day from here on out. They just breed to fast and can hide too many places to stop without being committed to ongoing measures against them.
