According to today's SMN, a new office building is set to go up adjacent to Ellis Square starting in the spring. The building will sit on top of the parking deck, where the surface lot is now between Avia and Lady & Sons. It's only going to be 6 floors, which unfortunately (or fortunately) is the height limit for commercial buildings in that part of the historic district. The U.S. Attorney Generals office will occupy the upper floors, but the street-level space will be filled with shops and restaurants. It will add a lot to an area that's already got a lot going on and help fill in that part of downtown.

Now, if somebody will just PLEASE do something to the unsightly building that used to house Sorry Charlie's and, years before that, Matthew's Seafood. It looks awful, and is in such a prime tourist location. I'm sure the owner is asking WAY too much for it (facing Ellis Square) but assume the structural problems that shut down Charlie's when they were building the parking garage have been resolved?

This is a definite plus for that area. Too bad it can't be any taller. ..and yes, they do need to do something with the old Sorry Charlie's. Put another bar there or something! =P

If the drawings are accurate, it will be a handsome building nonetheless -- perhaps one of the best looking buildings in all of downtown! (certainly better looking than the bathroom tile federal buildings across from the Telfair).

As for height, that's an unfortunate reality in Savannah, but not a bad thing. It will still be taller than everything else in that area, and add something to the skyline. With the small square-footage of building lots in the Historic District, it's hard to make projects cost effective and stay within the height limit. This building appears to be a good compromise.

FYI -- Buildings like 2 East Bryan, the DeSoto Hilton and Drayton Towers would never have been allowed under today's rules. One of the reasons why developers were so gung-ho on Hutchinson Island when it first began was there are no height restrictions over there, and thus they can get more bang for their buck. But so far, other than the Westin, nothing has materialized. Another high-rise hotel is proposed over there, though, but the condo towers that some originally perceived east of the Westin may never materialize ... at least in this economy.
