I have wondered the same thing for years. If there is a reason, it's not well known. However, it does make you remember what he is advertising. And that's what ads are supposed to do.

He just seems to be getting progressively more insane over the years, but not in a "made-for-TV" sort of insanity.

Back when he had his cue-card-reading son on the commercials ("Robo-tot," my mother used to call him) it was mildly annoying, but I figured someone who owns his own business and pays for the commercials can put his kid up there if he wants. Sometime during that period I recall a joke about accepting "almost anything for a trade-in," and the goat was used as sight gag for something they would NOT take. It then took on a life of its own because it was perceived as "folksy" (remember this was the period of time when our top-rated newscaster regularly featured giant vegetables as part of the banter between news and weather reports). Anyway....as Chip Welch gradually disappeared from dad's commercials (he must have hit puberty and began valuing his dignity), Welch's ads veered toward political statements about how evil it was not to buy American, and also centered on his moving the dealership to SC. Now he's doing the weird stuff with the Godfather references and the hat (goat still included), and it must just be his attempt at humor, though one would be more successful at such schtick if he did it tongue-in-cheek and let the viewer in on the 'joke'. It just screams (as it always has) of someone who pays for the commercials and just indulges his own ideas of what he wants to do on TV.

After all these years of weirdly unfocused messages and lame "hooks," I don't even pay attention any more. I just wrote him off as someone who lacks the sense to hire an ad agency to consult on a more consistent (and less unhinged) ad campaign. I wonder if Chip will ever live it down.

He recently had someone very close to him die. Between that & his dealership empire shrink down to one, I believe it's taken a toll on him, mentally. He look disheveled, unkempt, and lost.
