A cement truck went over the side of the back river approach to the Talmadge Bridge late this morning, killing the driver and shutting down the main route between the South Carolina Lowcountry and Downtown Savannah on our busiest tourist week of the entire year! Late this afternoon, alternate routes through Port Wentworth and Hardeeville were reportedly gridlocked. A coworker reported taking 3 hours to get from Hilton Head to Savannah (30 miles) around 3 p.m.

GADOT officials have closed the bridge until it can be determined how serious the structural damage is and if it can be repaired -- all this just 2 days before a half million revelers descend on the city for St. Patrick's Day. TERRIBLE NEWS! TERRIBLE TRAGEDY! TERRIBLE TIMING!

UPDATE: The DOT has done a temporary fix (replaced the missing sections of concrete wall with temporary slabs) and traffic is flowing again. WHEW!
