We are thinking of visiting Savannah later this year and would love some "insider" tips - any less well known but good places to visit for example.

Any suggestions, no matter how quirky, are welcome!

Unusual homes, stores, restaurants, coffee houses, museums, tours - whatever! Places that are not necessarily in the tourist guides or those that are and that you feel are must-sees!

Thank you

You have to remember that the entire Historic District is also a residential/business area. Therefore, just about everything that is worth seeing is well documented.

I don't know if you've been to the Mighty Eighth Museum, in Pooler, but I really loved it. It is so well done that even someone who is not a WWII buff would enjoy it. There is a very nice lunch restaurant inside the museum also.

I didn't mean to sound snippy, but the area, of what is commonly known as the Historic District, has many beautiful homes, etc. It's THE showplace.

The tours are for the HD visitor. There aren't any anywhere else. The great restaurants are all within the HD. Savannah has been set up for the visitor. Trust me on this, if it's not in a tourist guide, it probably doesn't exist. We have many beautiful areas, but they are private residential areas and not exactly set up for the tourist.

If you have a car, driving to Tybee, over the marshes, is worth a trip. That way, you would also be able to stop at Fort Jackson and Fort Pulaski. The only museum that I can think of outside of the HD would be the Mighty 8th military musuem in Pooler, Ga.
