Hey everyone. I'm being seriously considered for a position with a company right off of the I-16 Chatham Parkway exit. However, I just graduated from GSU and am considering still living in Statesboro. My rent here is 300 a month.

I'd like to hear from people that commute from Statesboro to Savannah. Do you save money? Is it worth it?

Figure up how much gas you are going to use in a month, then think if the low rent and travel problems is worth it.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be putting that many miles on my car every day, but that's just me. It's between 50-60 miles one way.

I did it for a year, but this was back when gas was less than $2 a gallon. Instead, what I recall most was the mind-numbing boredom of 45-60 minutes in the car *each way*. You will lose that 90 minutes to two hours of your day, so your "work day" will seem even longer.

The low rent was what kept me in the 'boro too, so I can understand. But I ended up moving to Savannah mostly because I was running up the odometer and worried that the car might conk out on that lonesome stretch of interstate. I agree you will need to weight the pros and cons, but the lost time is something I had not considered until it was too late.

What type of car do you drive? Also is it new, used, and paid off? Also is it leased?

I have quite a few friends who make or have made that commute many times. Absolutely none of them think it's worth it except the one that doesn't have to pay for their own gas. Most have stopped and just went ahead and moved either to statesboro or savannah depending on which way they needed to go, but the two that still make the drive say they do it because moving isn't an option and neither is giving up their job/school.

Every time I drive to Atlanta, Macon is closer to Atlanta. Not really the the metro areas are growing towards each other, so there is less space in between. I wonder if a smaller version of that effect will happen with Savannah's metro area growing west and Statesboro's growing toward Effingham county. Just a thought...In a few years maybe driving to Statesboro will be like driving to Rincon, currently.
