Here is the article that the moderator chose to cut - it is from a few days ago and outlines just exactly how violent and serious the crime is.

Here is another link to crime statistics - the statistics cover one of the nicest areas of the historic district.

I am just now singing up to this forum board, but I would like to say that I was born and raised in Savannah Georgia and if anyone knows about the crime I do. Crime has been a problem since I was a child.....it was a nice place to grow up, as long as you grew up in the right neighborhoods.

Today it saddens me so to see my home town so riddled with crime and areas I used to live in and around so run down. Yes, it's true just pick up any Savannah paper and you will see the crime and it is out of control. I wish it were different, but certainly the reality is that crime has always been higher in Savannah for it's population than the rest of the country. Even has a child in the fifth grade Savannah, for it's population (per capita) was third highest in the nation for crime.

My parents who live on Skidaway Island, went to see a movie two years ago at the Montgomery Cross Road Theatre and their car was stolen and stripped! Yes nice cars are not usually car jacked in Savannah, they are broken into and stolen though.

I hope you found a nice place in Savannah you are happy with.

I am a mother of a daughter who wants very much to go to SCAD. But I am very concerned about the crime rate. Since you have always lived there, how safe is it for the students?

I have lived in Richmond Hill for 7 years and worked in Savannah the same. RH is very safe, schools are good, but you have to drive. It is also very suburban, so if you are looking for Savannah city life, first bring lots of cash and be prepared for high taxes, and second, watch your back. Crime is bad, but you have to be smart. I grew up in Atlanta. The difference i see here, is that in Atlanta, you knew where NOT to go, whereas here in Sav, crime is everywhere. Some of the best neighborhoods are surrounded by projects with drugs and crime, which spill over. Sorry if you think this racist, but it is realistic. Also it's not only something happening in the South. If you read Savannah Morning News (online) you will see that most of it is black on black crime, however, a few years ago, we had a white debutante shot while she was walking around downtown. She died shortly after. We have also had at least one tourist killed, shot in the lower back, while walking back to her hotel from the Pink House restaurant. You just have to be careful. Personally, I carry a firearm on my person and have taken a self defense course.
