Hello,

My husband got a position last minute at Gulfstream and we have to relocate in less than two months (we come from Miami). We are planning to buy a 3-4 bedroom house, patio, family type (I am 6 months pregnant and we have 3 dogs).

We are not familiar with Savannah so I was wondering if someone could give us advice on what areas we should look at (a safe and nice area to raise a family). We are willing to buy a nice house at a decent price, close to parks, etc.

What areas are considered "upscale" that are close to Gulfstream?
What about hospitals (I am due in November!).

Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks.

Why didn't you take a look at the relocation thread at the top of the Savannah forum? It should answer questions you have instead of starting a new thread...

I did take a look. If I started a new thread was because I didn't find what I was looking for, thanks anyway...

Depends on what you mean by upscale. The way I would look at it, there aren't any such neighborhoods near Gulf Stream. Some posters might want to argue with me about that, but everyone has different ideas about what is "upscale."

I would suggest that you try to rent a suitable home near GS until you know the area and the traffic patterns better. There are some nice homes in the area.

We have three hospitals. None of them are in the Gulf Stream area. You need to plan on going to the one that your Obstetrician likes best. They often choose not to be "On Staff" at all three as that can be a big problem when patients decide to go to the one where there aren't any other women in labor.

If you are looking for a Hospital the closest to the Gulf stream that would be
Memorial University Medical Center, Saint Josephs, & Georgia Regional Hospital of Savannah. Harry Truman Pkwy should take you pass all of them. It's very odd for a city to not have hospitals downtown.

The Georgia Regional Hospital is for those with psychistric diagnosis.

The Memorial University Medical Center is a teaching hospital for Mercer University Medical School. It has a good neo-natal unit.

The Candler/St Joseph complex is just a couple of blocks west of Memorial.

If you would be coming from the eastern part of the County, You could reach them from the Truman Parkway. If you were coming from the Western part (Gulf Stream area) it would be easier to come in on 516 and Derenne Ave.

The main St Josephs is about five miles farther out than these two. If you were living out in the Georgetown area, it would be the most accessible. However, doctors with offices in the Midtown area don't like to tend to pregancy cases during the day that can take 30 minutes travel time during rush hours.

Candler and St Josephs used to be downtown hospitals. However as the city grew, fewer people lived in the downtown area and the hospitals were quite small and old. They HAD to be replaced. Where they were located there wasn't additional land available without destroying many old historic buildings and parks.

I hear many Gulfstream folks live in SC, since we are so close to the line. I live in Pooler and am very happy here. It is hard to tell you where to go, since I don't know what kind of lifestyle you would like. The Savannah hospitals...Memorial and Candler are quite capable of delivering your baby safely.
You should hook up with a realtor who can assess your requirements and advise you. I can PM you with some good real estate people if you want.

I would look at Pooler. Avoid Richmond Hill. I lived there for 9 years and it was awful!
