I would recommend calling the Tag Office and they should be able to direct you to the right person to answer your question. Good luck!

Calling the tag office is a safe bet. I bought a car in Maryland back in Feb and drove it back. In order to register the car I had to bring in the bill of sale to the tag office. I wrote them a check for GA sales tax on the car and the cost of the plate, walked out and was all good to go.

The way it normally works in other states is, they tag office will look to see if sales tax was paid in another state and the value of the car on the date of sale. If the sales tax was paid at a higher rate than the sales tax in the registering state then there will be no sales tax due. If however the rate is lower for example buying a car in a state with a sales tax of 5% then transferring it to Ga. then a 2% difference is applied as Chatham county sales tax is 7%. This is to keep people from sales tax state shopping. Also if it is a private sale then Kelly Blue Book or other fair price guide will be used to see if the price paid for was fair. This is to keep people from ripping off the state.
