Anyone live in the Savannah/Tybee area? If you do could you tell me if these areas have those pesky (non biting) S. Georgia gnats? I read that above the fall line in GA. there are no gnats. Any truth to it?

As far as I know, there is no such thing as a non-biting gnat. The ones here, bite. Sometimes they just fly about and bother people, but if they land on bare skin, they can bite.

I have been covered head to toe in gnat bites since march. Look like I got leprosy some times. Hate the gnats

I grew up in central GA, and the gnats swarmed and hovered about to the point of complete annoyance. They never did bite me, though. On the other hand, the gnats in Savannah and Brunswick definitely do bite, ouch! The locals on St Simons said they were called sand gnats.

I live in northern GA now, and I rarely ever see a gnat.

Default Gnats in Savannah/Tybee Island

I lived in south Florida, I know about sand gnats near the coast, they bite. But, the ones I want to know about is the non-biting gnats as the post from N. Georgia stated. They are irritating. So all there is in Savannah/Tybee area is sand gnats? Above the fall line in Georgia there is suppose to be no gnats from what I have read. The fall line runs from Columbus to Augusta, GA.

For awhile I lived in Baxley, Ga, South of the fall line. We did not have sand gnats, we had some other kind. They were large and you could see them flying straight at you and into your eyes and mouth. Very very annoying.

We have some kind of gnat here in Gwinnett County.. though I'm not sure if it really is a gnat. It looks like one, but they don't bite. I guess I got used to Savannah.

BTW, to those that don't know, Gwinnett County is definitely above the fall line....by about 80 miles or so.

In Savannah & Tybee, the gnats here are strictly the biting kind.

Sand gnats on the coast bite (no-see-ums), gnats in central and south Georgia you can see, they swarm around your head but don't bite, people "blow" them out of their eyes. No gnats above the fall line worth worrying about, thus some would say why 80 percent of Georgians live above the gnat ... er, fall line.

I used to be a believer that there were absolutely no gnats about the Fall Line....but a couple weeks ago I was in Conyers and was surprised to see a small swarm of them about the size of a basketball. A couple even got in the car. It still wasn't anywhere NEAR the amount you find in South GA though.
