I know this is ho-hum for the Hostess City of the South, but we all gotta pay for the martinis somehow! Let's talk about industries and companies in Savannah, if we may. I'm curious for the locals' thoughts on great companies and industries in Savannah (or any rants on the not-so-great ones, too). We'll be there in just two weeks now and its hard, as an outsider, to know what to expect in terms of work down there.
Thank you all for the thoughts in advance!

The only big one I know about is Gulfstream. Everything else is the hospitals. Shipping (logistics) is big here. Savannah has the 5th biggest port in America.

It depends on what you mean by "great". Great in size can be a big difference from great to work for.

Of Course, Georgia Ports, then, Imperial Sugar, International Paper, Hunter Air Force Base uses a large number of civilian employees. Also, the US Corp of Engineers. The various shipping companies have set-ups apart from the Georgia Ports. Also, companies like Colonial Oil that receive shipments at the Port.

There is also a big farm equipment manufactor in Port Wentworth. It's name is JB something or other.

You will find that the BIG companies are to the west side of Chatham County. That's the only place where there was enough available land to build on.

A word of explanation about Georgia Ports. It's large and it does employ a lot of people. However, the shippers and other businesses that use the port, lease property from the Georgia Port and manage their business separately. So, if you were looking for a position in that area, a look at the other businesses might be worth the trouble of finding out where the personnel offices were. They could even be in the downtown historic district.
