Let me just state first for the record: I HATE NY EVE! It's amateur night for stupid drunks and an excuse for otherwise decent people to act like fools. And boy oh boy, were they in abundance downtown last night! For years, I've made it a point to work or stay home each Dec. 31. This year, I was asked to work an event at one of the hotels downtown -- a pricey dinner / show / midnight champagne thingy. Ugh. But the money was good and the guests were really fun -- tourists from all over the county here to celebrate. Sadly, what they saw on the streets after midnight wasn't pretty. I swear, it was worse than any St. Patrick's I've ever seen. Every street. Every square. Every block. Falling down drunks. Vomiting in bushes. Peeing in alleys. Just nasty.

And since when did the city allow carnival-type food vendors to set up on every vacant lot hawking sausage dogs and funnel cakes?! Cheap and tacky!

Whatever revenue the city takes in for allowing public consumption of alcohol can't possibly be enough to compensate for the headaches it causes. Not to mention the strain it puts on our overworked and under-paid public safety workers.

At least the cab companies had a good night, I guess.

And that's my rant for the new year!

Sounds like another typical holiday in Savannah.

Take the good with the bad I guess?

It does bring in money after all..

You may be right WI. Because I've intentionally avoided it for so many years, I'm just super appalled by all the stupidity that goes on NY Eve -- drunks shooting guns into the air?! Ridiculous! And don't get me started on the silly hats and annoying noise makers. Kissing the nearest stranger? Parading babies in nothing but a diaper and sash? Watching objects descend from the sky? Singing an Irish folk song nobody knows the words to?

I agree with most of the OP. In fact, it kinda depresses me to watch this spectacle each year (and I'm no saint or prune). I have come to reconcile the whole thing with the attitude "It is what it is" and TRY to understand the behavior of other people. I'm careful not to judge others on this type of night because I think back on many occasions when on a particular night... I acted the same.
