But it just does concern me about the outlying areas. Mainly because I live in a far out area of Atlanta now, and have lived here for a long time, and the people are like that. You literally cannot just go hang out and have a few drinks with a neighbor w/o the stuff coming up. The minute you say Obama is anything less than some taliban, socialist, nazi implant here to destroy America single handedly, then you are never talking to those people again and they won't even let their kids play with yours anymore.

Just do not want to end up in another area like this. Rincon, Pooler, and Bluffton S.C., seem like decent areas, but just a little concerned if they are hardcore religious-right type of areas. I have heard opinions on both sides..So it gets very confusing as to what to believe!

Those kinds of people are literally everywhere. A number of people I know (all residents of Wilmington Island) have expressed these same views in front of me on several occasions.

You might as well get comfortable with the idea that we're surrounded by some of the most ill-informed, hypocritical, self-declared Christian folk since the early 1960's civil rights hate killings.

At be same time, there is a fair representation of many other kinds of people who fill out the spectrum from far right to left.

I'm just tring to be fair. Our neighborhoods are not politically segregated. But you can pretty much bet that what's left of the middle class in Savannah is doing everything it can to undermine itself with this kind of nonsense.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. Honestly (and I may get bashed in here for this, hopefully not), I hope Obama wins a second term. I don't believe any republican could do any better.

Politics aside though, Bluffton really isn't that bad! That whole area is a bunch of old retired northern folk with a few blue collared workers thrown in the mix.
You can find great hiking trails and a nicer beach on that side of the river as well. Plus, if all else fails, Savannah is right over the river. It'd be that much more pleasant not having to commute all that time. Time that could be spent doing other more enjoyable things!
BTW, I'm interested to know what part of Atlanta you're coming from!

Back on track--

If you are from the ATL an hour commute won't necessarily get you down. In Savannah, 15 minutes is a LONG time to get across town. There is no traffic, from an ATL, NYC, LA or DC point of view.

I say go for it. Find somewhere downtown in the Historic District, close as possible to your main commuting route over the bridge. Try it out and see you what think. A short term lease may be the best answer while you test the waters.

Stay Away or Get Away, please.

For those who are away, Stay Away.

For those who are here and not stuck (poor, or military), Get Away.

Run Fast. Run Far.

I don't know any of you. The same way I would pull someone I didn't know out of a wreck, or call 911 if there was a gap in the road just past a crest, I would not wish this place on anybody. Even in this day and age, the authorities of Savannah and its outlying areas are especially corrupt, lazy and incompetent, making this town effectively an english-speaking 3rd-world city-state.

...and we have no use for people like yourself. Outside of some VERY small pockets, you're not going to get along with many people here. Promise.

Why else are there so many left leaning folks on online chat boards like this one? Because they cannot have meaningful relationships with others in the real world.

We are moving to Beaufort, SC in July and are also looking for nice community and great schools in that area. We have a 8 & a 12 years old daughters and looking for elementary, middle and high schools that are good for them. We have been googling schools online but it seems like better schools are in Savannah but my husband who will be working in the Marine Base will have to do long commute. Would really appreciate advise and informations from anyone who lives in SC now.
Thank you

Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island ~ We Make Marines

Have you directly contacted someone at Parris Island and asked them for advice? Based on your posts, you've known about this for several months. Maybe you should ask where the officers live. Beaufort is a beautiful and somewhat diverse city. I imagine there are many savvy military families who do not live in bad neighborhoods. Military folks tend to help each other out. Ask your husband to get suggestions.

Here's something else: http://www.wvec.com/news/military/pi...-66990392.html

"But other Marines, especially those with families, see Parris Island as a prime posting. "I think most Marines, once they get here and get to know the area, really love it," said Maj. Lee Helton, a California native who is executive officer of a recruit training battalion, and who lives in Beaufort."
