I was just wondering if you guys think an interstate linking Savannah and Wilmington, DE would be be feasiable. I think would it would becuase it would certainly relieve a lot of traffic off of Interstate 95. It would also bring new commerce and businesses to places like Jacksonville, NC, Wilmington, NC, Mrytle Beach, Charleston and Hilton Head. Here's a link to a study VDOT did regarding the proposal:

Sure! Any highway from Any Place to Another Place is worthwhile to some.

However, is it worth it to ALL the TAXPAYERS that would have to foot the bill for it?

And, (this is the big question) would it be the best use of that much money?

My opinion, whilch is worth nothing, is that we could really use an Interstate that headed westward without going to, and around Atlanta, first.

Seriously, to link those places along the Coastal Areas, would be extremely expensive. You would have to allow for possible flooding and other damage during times of hurricanes. The occasional flooding from just minor tropical storms that would cause washouts means that much of the road way would have to be elevated.

There are signs at Mrytle Beach that warn that in times of flooding, that road would be under 10 feet of water. That's not an area for Interstates. You want roads that are easily repaired.

The Low Country in the Savannah/Hilton Head/Charleston area is LOW. Some is even below sea level. Up in Delaware, it may be a different story.

There's a good reason why I-95 is more inland. It's on higher ground. The danger of damage from ocean storms is greatly reduced.

RIGHT ON PADGETT!

If you really want to see how ridiculous this proposal is, click on the link and see the PATH they've got it following -- DIRECTLY ACROSS THE CHARLESTON PINNESULA AND STRAIGHT UP THE GRAND STRAND! There's a good reason why I-95 through Glynn County was the last portion of I-95 to be rebuilt by the state of Georgia recently -- it's almost entirely over water and bridges and now resembles a super urban expressway. INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE!

I skimmed through that report and it seems to me that every state feels that they have better things and better roads to spend their money on.

This report dates back to 2006. It makes you wonder whose bright idea it was. I agree with you, Newsboy, that proposed route was just plan silly. Imagine buying up all that privately owned water front property!!!!

What we need is an enhanced rail system so we don't have to drive at all.

Oh yes!!! And please, please make it possible to get from one place to another without stopping for every cow path and teensy crossroad hamlet along the way.

Ellie. does our Amtrak line go up through Charleston or does it follow the I 95 route up to Florence, etc? Seems like a day train excursion between SAV and CHAS would be pretty cool!
