One thing you CANNOT do: Watch from the tops of parking decks. The city is VERY strict about that. Guess it was a major problem years back?

And yes, after St. Patrick's Day, 4th of July Fireworks is definitely the biggest crowd draw downtown. But there won't be a million people down there LOL -- maybe a couple hundred thousand.

You reallly can't get the full effect of the display unless you view it from River Street.
