This will be our first 4th of July in Savannah and my wife and I would like to see how Savannah celebrates the 4th. We live downtown and most places will be within biking distance for us. Is the river front the best place? Or will there be better locations? Thanks!

I haven't done that in years...think 1999 when they were rehearsing for Y2K. Public celebrations in Savannah seem to bring out the same crowd of strangers. It will be hot and crowded on River Street, but you might as well have the experience. Your bike will get in the way, so lock it someplace safe once you are close.

Next year, reserve a room on Tybee for the day/night of the 3rd of July. That's a lot more fun. Trouble is the traffic getting home. That's why you should spend the night.

Since you live downtown, WALK to River Steet. Your bike will be in the way.

The fireworks are shot off from barges across the River near the Westin. Anywhere with a clear view of that are will be a good place.

Thanks. Is it more crowded than the St. Patricks Day Parade?

There are a number of streets in downtown that have fireworks every nite. No crowds, no parking problems. Bring a roach and a flak jacket.
Have fun.

It used to be fairly crowded, which is why I stopped going. But maybe since its on a Wednesday, it wont be too bad.

Best place to see them is from a boat; the river is always JAMMED with pleasure craft for that! If not, then most definitely River Steer; though I'm wondering -- what prevents people from riding the ferry over to Hutchinson and watching from the Trade Center promenade? Wonder if they charge for that?

One thing you CANNOT do: Watch from the tops of parking decks. The city is VERY strict about that. Guess it was a major problem years back?

And yes, after St. Patrick's Day, 4th of July Fireworks is definitely the biggest crowd draw downtown. But there won't be a million people down there LOL -- maybe a couple hundred thousand.
