My wife and I would like to celebrate my fiftieth in Savannah this coming January. I would appreciate advice on where we should stay. Many thanks!

Check out the Marshall House on Broughton Street. It's a restored old hotel with LOTS of history and has a balcony on the 2nd floor you can walk out on.

There is also a very nice bistro inside the hotel as well which is not affiliated with the hotel itself called 45 Bistro.

It also helps that it's VERY convenient to everything in the Historic District.

This is probably the most authentic hotel in the city. Give 'em a call 912-644-7896.

Also, any hotel on Bay St. would be a good place to walk to anything you would want to see in Savannah. Pay attention to parking, and how much it will cost.

Tons of good hotels. Savannah has no shortage of them. If you want a taste of gentility, there are many good B&Bs here. If you are less cozy, and want something more anonymous, The Marshall House is a premier option - good customer service, too. Being right on Broughton, you're close to City Market and River Street. Another more upscale place is the Mansion on Forsyth Park (a little more out of the fray and south of the heart of downtown, but still within walking distance during daylight hours to things downtown).

Other places more in the thick of things are the Planters Inn (where sometimes you can get really good deals), the Andaz hotel (formerly the Avia - sort of chic and modern), the Bohemian (right on the river with a great bar), the East Bay Inn (also right on the river, and kind of nice).

Then, there are a slew of your more run-of-the mill places, which are "nice" but probably not all that "special." Staybridge Suites, the Hyatt, Four Points by Sheraton, etc.

In January some of the B&B's used to reduce their rates. Look online and see what appeals to you. There are usually ratings on each. Call a few of your favorites and see which ones are willing to offer you a good deal. Tell them it's your anniversary. They may have something special for you.

As others have said, Savannah has plenty of nice places to stay. But, as locals, few of us have stayed in them.

When I first moved to the Savannah area I stayed one or twice, at the Marshall House. The room I had,(don't know about the other rooms),but my room was so small I could turn off the TV without a remote. Lol.

The rooms in the Marshall House vary widely in size. There are the super tiny rooms like you're describing and there are the rooms with living area and bedroom. That's part of the beauty of the place. Lots of different quirks including the hallways.

Ansley, if you decide against TMH, at least go inside and take a tour of the place.

The restaurant is fabulous. Funny that I discovered the restaurant long after I stayed at the hotel.
