I just left The Grey Market. Somewhat limited menu but the food was amazing. Super friendly staff! I had a hot sliced pork sandwich with Swiss and apple chutney and a side of sour cream potato wedges. Simple but delicious. The prices are a little high ($20 including an iced tea) but this is The Grey after all. I think you’d pay more for the same lunch at the main restaurant.

The market includes a full wine store upstairs.

I must admit I have never been to the Grey. I have been to every restaurant surrounding them including the fantastic bar on the left corner, the Mexican restaurant (ooo soo bad) and the Japanese restaurant (eh, ok and never busy). I just can't wrap my arms around "trendy " restaurants. Especially one that proclaims to re-invent southern food at a very high price. That style is the same in NY. If it opens and is trendy, chances are I'm not going. I give them 2 years before I even consider it.

We went to the Distillery today. The fabulous crab cakes were not on the menu, but the clam chowder was great.

I have only eaten in the bar at The Grey, which I understand is a different menu than the main dining room. I found the bar service to be impersonal and somewhat intimidating but I think they do that intentionally. When they say this restaurant is cut from the NYC mold they aren’t kidding. Maybe that’s why it’s gotten so much press and accolades from national media, because it’s not your typical southern fine dining restaurant.

I just got lunch (and it will be dinner also) at the new fancyParker’sthat’s notasfancyastherealfancyparkers, in Pooler. Everything looked good and they have a good selection of hot foods. It’s not the experience of the one downtown, but I can see how it will be very popular with the Savannah Quarters crowd.

While not a restaurant review, some area female chefs have started a chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier. It's the second chapter for the state.

Quote:
The Savannah/Coastal Georgia chapter is the second one in the state. An Atlanta chapter was founded in 1996 and nearby Charleston, South Carolina has chapter which was founded in 2005.

Sage, a food alchemist, holistic wellness coach and herbalist, co-owns The Farmer and The Larder in Brunswick as well as Sage’s Larder, said that the Savannah/Coastal Georgia group aims to break down some of the barriers that women in the culinary world often face and encourage the younger generation to come forward.

Had some business downtown this morning and finally made it to Maple Street Biscuits on Broughton Street. The menu is quite extensive but primarily features different biscuit and gravy combos (chicken, ham, spinach, cheeses etc), grits bowls, waffles etc. I had THE FIVE which is a biscuit topped with fried chicken topped with bacon topped with cheese topped with house-made sausage gravy “with a kick” (cayenne I’m guessing). It was good but not for the faint of heart. I also ordered a side of “Hashups” which are home fries topped with diced ham, red and green peppers, onions and cheese. I ended up taking the latter home because it was just too much food.

Prices are a bit high for breakfast IMO but if I were downtown in the mornings more often I’d probably make this a regular stop. It’s certainly a fun place to take guests, with a really cool interior and vibe. But I hear the lines are down the block on weekends.

This is a family business started in Jacksonville 6 years ago. They just opened their 30th location.

I went to Another Broken Egg Cafe, in Pooler. Don’t travel from Savannah to eat there, but if you’re there, it’s fine. The mimosas are better than great. They also serve Bloody Mary’s. My omelette was over cooked, but dh’s Nellie Chicken sandwich was good. I fear that a brunch restaurant that can’t make an omelette is a problem.

I share that fear -- along with roast chicken on any restaurant menu. These two dishes really should be good, anywhere on earth.
