I just moved to Savannah, GA in September, by advice of this forum, and I wanted to know if there were any public assistance available for helping with shelter/utility bills. I am rooming with two other people and I really don't want them to know I am unable to pay for rent when it comes up, the job I found is just moving too slow and I am really nervous about being unable to meet $330 before next month.

Do you know any concerted services or anyone like that who would be able to help me out? It's really embarrassing to have to come here and ask, let alone being unable to pay my bills, it has never happened to me before. Thanks..

EDIT: I read through your old posts to see when THIS FORUM advised you to move here. We didn't. You asked the Georgia forum and one Savannah resident replied. I'm pretty sure few of here would strongly recommend relocating to this city without a good job. It's hard to get established here, especially with the economy being so weak.

That being said, I'm not sure you will qualify for assistance. You're not a good candidate for HUD, as near as I can tell.

Two ideas: sign up with a labor pool like manpower. (912) 354-5440. Go in person once you know where they are.

Start applying for jobs in person, if you can. You have to set yourself apart from the faceless masses. Try grocery chains like Publix. Ask to speak to a manager. Dress well at all times.

I have heard, BUT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT, an agency that places people in jobs at the port for a fee. That's all I know....check it out and good luck.

There is some kind of day laborer place on W Bay St. It looks as if men go there and get vanned to places to work. Sorry I don't have more specifics.
